Hi John:
I guess it's August now, and as far as I know there have been no fatal or
serious injury crashes involving e-bikes in Madison. Please mail your $100
to
Madison Bikes Inc.

Madison, WI 53726-0244
Or you can donate online and contribute to our Pinney Library fundraiser

John, I'd happily take you up on the bet! $100 that there won't be a
fatality on the bike path in Madison that involves someone on an e-bike
before the end of July 2019. Maybe we can get another bikie as a bookie and
referee. And so that we don't run afoul of any gambling regulations, you

A heads-up that the topic of winter maintenance is on the agenda for
Monday's Transportation Policy & Planning Board meeting (Jan 7, 5pm, 210
Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Council Chambers Room 201).
It would be great if some people who ride in the winter would attend the
meeting and emphasize how
Funny, I would've never even thought about not locking my bike to a rack
just because there was a lock attached to it. As Chuck said, people don't
want to haul around their locks, and so leaving them attached to a rack
seems like a good solution that doesn't inconvenience anyone.

Council meeting begins at 6:30. I think you can show up then and comment
early.

Also on the agenda tonight is Mayor Soglin's veto of the Winnebago St
reconstruction, which would have included buffered bike lanes. It's
probably safe to assume that a lot of residents who would be affected by
the reduction in on-street parking have submitted comments to the council.
So please als
Hey Bikies:
Forwarding this action alert from Madison Bikes. Winnebago Street is being
reconstructed, and one option would create buffered bike lanes as well as
canopy street trees. We'll need lots of public support to make that happen.
Thanks,
Harald.

There will probably a summary in the Madison Bikes Calendar Review (coming
out next Monday). This is the proposed layout. And yes, the whole project
happened on extremely short notice, meaning that some of the things
presented at the meeting didn't seem fully thought through. But the
timeline is ex
Also interesting: One of the key findings they highlight from the survey
they did earlier this year is 54% of participants pointing to improved
public transport as part of the improvement strategy. But all the options
they're putting on the table don't seem to contain anything about PT and

It should be noted that this is not a new study per se, but a
meta-analysis, that is, the author analyzed a lot of other studies and
summarized their findings. Rune Elvik did the same thing a couple years
back and came to very different conclusions:

I just got back from the meeting. Bike-relevant points:
- Narrowing the roadway by two feet appears to be off the table. Both
people interested in cycling and not interested in cycling spoke against
narrowing.
- Intersection bulb-outs were relatively uncontroversial. However, the city

Sorry, that summary is not correct: They didn't study if *wearing a helmet* had
an impact on injury rates but if *helmet legislation* did so. Two quite
different things. Link to the actual study:

I think the company may have just made an honest error in placing the stop
signs. Obviously they meant to have them facing the roadway, not the trail,
so that their drivers and other people on Marketplace are reminded of their
crosswalk obligations. Maybe you or another trail user should help them
