It was 'snowy' up here today :)
An almost completely white Snowy Owl was sitting on a fence post on the west
side of Hwy 21 about 2 miles south of Port Elgin.
Six Snow Geese were in a corn field with hundreds of Canada Geese on the east
side of Hwy 21 just north of North Bruce.

The weather can't make up its mind but the birds have decided it's spring.
Arrivals in the past 2 weeks include Sandhill Cranes, Great Blue Herons, Great
Egrets, Cormorants, Eastern Phoebe, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Eastern Bluebirds,
Tree and Barn Swallows.

Michael Carlson called to report a Wilson's Phalarope at the Independent pond.
Take highway 21 north out of Port Elgin just past the Independent grocery
store, turn west on Concession 10 and the pond is on the left.

Many new migrants have been observed over the past two weeks - Field and Fox
Sparrows, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Double-crested Cormorant, American
Woodcock, Eastern Bluebird and Eastern Phoebe.
Waterfowl numbers are increasing - Northern Shoveller, American Wigeon,
Ring-necked Duck, Blue
Killdeer, Meadowlarks, Song and Chipping Sparrows have all arrived in the past
week. No one has reported a Bluebird yet.
The heavy rain has clogged the Saugeen River with ice and debris but waterfowl
are finding open places in some areas. The flooded fields should be good over
the weekend for
It felt like spring today. Lake Huron is starting to break up and inland
rivers and creeks have open areas. There are large flocks of American Robins,
Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles and Horned Larks throughout the area.

The Snowy Egret is being observed on a daily basis. It is most often seen in
Horseshoe Bay which is the bay immediately north of Miramichi Bay. From hwy 21
just north of Port Elgin, take Concession 10 toward Lake Huron, turn right on
the first and only road, follow it around past Miramichi Bay

Tree Swallows, Green-wing Teal, yellowlegs sp, Fox Sparrow and Northern
Shoveller have all arrived in the area. A trip along Georgian Bay produced
over 100 Long-tailed Ducks, White-winged Scoters, Horned Grebe, Red-necked
Grebe, Common and Red-breasted Mergansers. House Finch, Eastern Bluebird
Spring migration is gaining momentum. Sandhill Cranes, Killdeer, Great Blue
Herons, Double-crested Cormorants, Northern Flicker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker,
Eastern Meadowlarks, and many ducks: Ring-necked, Pintail, Greater and Lesser
Scaup, Redhead, Black, Blue-wing Teal, and of course Mallards.
Lake Huron, local rivers and many inland lakes are open now but ducks have not
arrived in large numbers yet. Tundra Swans are occasionally being observed in
southern parts of the county. Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, and
Brown-headed Cowbirds have all arrived this week. Turkey Vultu
61 Sandhill Cranes flew over travelling NNE. They circled for about 5 minutes
in the Burgoyne area, then continued on their way - still travelling in the
same direction. It was interesting to note that a separate group of 7
Sandhills followed at a distance but did not join the first group.

There are very few shorebirds in the region -
some Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs at Miramichi
Bay (between Southampton and Port Elgin),
Killdeer and Semipalmated Plovers. The large
amount of rain has overfilled many of the ponds
and the west wind is pushing the water high on
shore along Lake
It's a beautiful day in the county and the birds
are quite happy after the past cool and dreary
week. I ran into birders everywhere I went
today.
One group of birders had excellent views of a
Peregrine this morning - it was low enough to
clearly see that the crop was very full.

The moment that I post a report, it's outdated. Bobolink, Purple Martin and
Baltimore Oriole were all observed within hours of my last report. Many
species of warblers have arrived this week - Nashville, Magnolia,
Black-and-white, Yellow, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Northern

Sandhill Cranes are passing through the area. A group of about 25 circled over
the rivermouth at Southampton before continuing north yesterday. Pairs are
being observed in area cornfields throughout the area. Snow Geese are being
reported in the southern parts of the county. Eastern Meadowla
Last night I heard my first Woodcock of the year (about an hour after you left
Dennis). Northern Saw-whet Owls are migrating. Red-winged Blackbirds,
Killdeer, Robins, Grackles have all arrived in the past week. There are still
no Great Blue Herons on Chantry Island. Horned Lark and Snow Bunt

to post anything about the Tobermory Christmas Bird Count. 46 species were
located and the highlights were a Red-headed Woodpecker in Tobermory, a pair of

The Northern Hawk-owl is still being observed at the corner of Dyer's Bay Road
and McNair Road (hwy 6 north to Dyer's Bay road, east approximately 2 km to
McNair Road). The owl is often perched on the hydro wires and poles along the
north side of the road. No reports of Snowy Owls yet. Northe
There's a nice variety of ducks at Kincardine Sewage
lagoons - Redhead, Bufflehead, Mallard, Gadwall,
Lesser and Greater Scaup, Ruddy, Northern Shoveller.

At Mirimachi Bay, between Southampton and Port Elgin
along Lake
This morning there were approximately 45 Turkey Vultures lined up on all of the
fence posts down both sides of a farm lane. From a distance they looked like a
distinguished honour guard. Flocks of several thousand Starlings have been
swirling in unison over the fields and settling into the tre
Eastern kingbirds, Least flycatchers, Eastern phoebe, Woodcock, Snipe, Caspian
and Common terns are all being observed daily in the area. There are a few
beautiful Rough-legged hawks still hanging around.

have been observed over the past few days.
Upland sandpiper, Baltimore oriole, Rose-breasted grosbeak, Chipping sparrows,
Harriers, Bobolink, Meadowlark, Brown thrasher, sparrows, etc. are all visible
from my deck
