If you create a google account and use iGoogle, you can add all kinds of

I would say that is definitely classic virus-type behavior. If you find a
virus with avast, you should scan your computer more than once, and keep
doing it until you get zero threats found or something to that effect. You
might have a Trojan horse, and those can take a long time to clean out.

No plugins for word in my antivirus, and I disabled it to see if that might
cause the problem, but the problem persists. I'm using AVG.
