Actually Mark, if you were to run aptitude and if it says it cannot find any packages, it may reference packages with nano in its description. You can then paste those in your next apt-get or aptitude. Otherwise, a more drastic step would be useing a question mark, as in aptitude install nano?

I don't know which version of Debian you're running, but I just did some quick checks, and: Debian oldstable(Wheezy?) and Debian Stable(still Jessie for now though I believe Stretch is in Release Candidate) both offer a 2.2.6 version of nano.
