The best solder? It doesn't matter. I use some cheap stuff I bought at
Radio Shack in the 1980's. You can use lead-free, if you want, but I
don't personally have any that's not ultra fine so getting enough solder
in the joint is a problem.
What matters is the iron.
You need to use iron
There were four 811's in the RCA transmitter I used to babysit. That
thing was a brick.
The Harris daytime transmitter was a lot less reliable.

I found 60/40 tin lead with rosin on Amazon for electrical projects. I was
going to replace the entire coax but the top connection is two feet out of
my reach. I told my wife I would just shimmy up the telescoping mast and
she said heck no. Maybe I can budge it two feet down or maybe I can tie a
I use Alpha Cleanline rosin core .032 diameter 63/37 for the tip, using a Hakko
888D with pencil tip at 750 degrees F. I use Alpha rosin core 21406 (.093
diameter) 40/60 for the shield, using a Hakko 936 with chisel tip at 800
degrees F.

I use a Weller 80-Watt (big) pencil iron for the ground / shield. Goes
nice and quick.
Smaller wattage irons actually overheat it more by the time the solder
flows. Counter-intuitive, I know.

The discussion on the tubes and tube testing was fantastic!

Non acid core for sure. HI Typically 60/40 but the Bvarc meeting with K0NEB
highlighted kit building and he suggested a different mix.
Have a look at the recording.

Just curious what is the best solder you have used on pl259 connectors? I
ran out and can’t remember exactly what kind it was.

An 811 is a tube from the 40s, I recall a Western Electric KW broadcast
transmitter that used a pair to modulate a pair. It was a brute. To my
knowledge tube testers were not intended to test transmitter tubes.maybe a TV
fly back tube The way to test them is in a transmitter noting the watts
