No luck on either the grebe or red knots, but did find a few birds of interest.
20 Snow Geese hanging around the marina, with a Canvasback and few Redheads.
Offshore were a pair of Red-breasted Mergansers, several Common Mergansers, and
a pair of Bufflehead. Near the flagpole (east end of park)
Sunday morning about 9 AM found 2 Whimbrel, 1 Ruddy Turnstone, & 7
Black-bellied Plovers in the open area just before the eagle sculpture on
Montezuma's wildlife drive. There were also semi-palmated plovers and a few of
sandpipers (mostly least?).

Found FOY Scarlet Tanager on Orchard Trail (not far from parking lot) and a
Bobolink on the north end of Orchard Trail about 2 PM Friday afternoon. Also
had Blue-headed Vireo & Blackburnian Warbler on Ridge Trail (and lots of RB
Grosbeaks & B. Orioles. Nashville Warblers near both e. Tyre Rd & r
Wide variety of ducks on the main pool, including Common Merganser, Ruddy,
Redhead, and all the usual ones. Virginia Rails calling near La Rue's Lagoon
(both sides of the road). Counted 14 Great Egrets fairly far out on the main

found a little conflict between ebird & the American Birding Association list
rules. I was curious to see what others consider "countable" when it comes to
their life lists. The ABA seems to make numerous changes to
Swung through Seneca Lake SP about 7:30 this morning. Huge Aythya raft was a
ways offshore (moving closer when I left). Lots of Canada Geese near the shore,
with a few possible Cackling among them. Large group of gulls across from
entrance area included what I believe were a couple Glaucous Gull
I'm not of the Genesee list so I'm posting here. Had a flock of 15-20 Lapland
Longspur with 2 or 3 Horned Larks on Nations Rd (south of Avon) just south of
Little Rd. 2 Short-eared Owls were on the corner of Little & Nations roads and
2 Barred Owls were in the woods on north side of Little Rd. P
About 1 PM Friday I found a flock of about 50+ Horned Larks along with one
Lapland Longspur. They were along the shoulder of Fayette-Varick Townline Rd
(west of Hoster Rd intersection). Also had a great view of a Merlin along Rte
89, just south of Canoga (west side of the road). Tundra Swans, Re
Drove along Martin Rd (by the Lott Farm/Empire Farm Days site) Monday morning
and had Eastern Meadowlarks, a Bobolink, & 3 Upland Sandpipers. (Please get
permission before driving on the Lott Farm).
Also had 1 Yellow Warbler, 1 Palm, Warbler, & lots of Yellow-rumps on the South
Spring Pool trai
Found a Solitary Sandpiper and a few Ruby-crowned Kinglets in with all the
Golden-crowned along the South Spring Trail at Montezuma Saturday evening.
Pelican, Ross’s Goose, Tundra Swans still along the wildlife drive on Saturday
(didn’t relocate Wilson’s Snipe from Friday). Western Meadowlark st
I found a Gyrfalcon on Yellow Tavern Rd, west of rte 414 in the town of Fayette
Sat morning. It appears to be a more brownish morph, or possibly a juvenile
gray morph. I don’t think it is the same bird that has been seen at the nearby
stone quarry (along Canoga Rd) despite the close proximity. P
In among the numerous Canada Geese at the Montezuma Visitor Center, I had a
couple cackling geese & a hybrid Snow/Canada Goose (photos on Eaton Birding
Society facebook page). Also had what appears to be a snow goose in the mix
(had it’s head down the whole time). The duck variety included pinta

Fairgrounds (Not the Lott Farm!) in the village of Waterloo (North Rd/Swift

water tower and any available pole/post on the fairgrounds.

Esker Brook trail was very
I would highly recommend calling any place first before driving there to get a
park pass, I was told Seneca Falls Women’s Park does not sell them (since they
don’t charge an entry fee). You can try to purchase them on-line, but expect a
long delay in receiving them. Be sure to try and purchase t
Carncross road to the parking area on Howland’s Island is now accessible and
mostly dry. I stopped at the end of the wooded section (just before the parking
area) and found quite a few birds. Indigo Buntings, Baltimore Orioles, RB
Grosbeaks, and a pair of Yellow-billed Cuckoos. Also had Yellow,
Sunday seemed to bring in a lot along the Esker Brook Trail. Found Blue-winged,
Black & White, Blackburnian, BT Green, Am. Redstart, not to mention dozens of
Yellow Warblers. Also had Scarlet Tanager, RB Grosbeak, and a Black-billed
Cuckoo on the trail.

Had a report of a juvenile N. Goshawk on rte 96 near Yellow Tavern Rd
(Romulus/Fayette). The wildlife drive is still open at Montezuma, with large
numbers of ducks (12+ species). Tundra Swans also being very vocal. Had at
least 2 Cattle Egrets on East Tyre Rd (between Lay Rd & rte 89) in a horse

Despite the wind, a lot going on at the refuge. Thousands of ring-necked ducks
with canvasback, redhead, ruddy, Am wigeon, gadwall, mallard, pintail,
shovelers, to name a few. Had at least 6 Bald eagles on the drive (including 3
juveniles together harassing the ducks). A group of 5 TUNDRA swans

Yellow-crowned Night-heron that was seen on the walk around Knox-Marsellus
Sunday with Dave Nutter. It was located in a small pool along the north end of
the dike that runs between Puddler’s & Knox-Marsellus. Photos are

I was at Knox-Marsellus until about 7:30 PM watching the pair of Snowy Egrets
as they lifted off the marsh, circled a couple times, and headed south. I was
unable to relocate them after a quick look at Mays Point & the Wildlife Drive.

Northern Saw-whet Owl seen Thu night about 11 PM, off East Lake Rd in Fayette

Sat morning on the east end of Ogden Rd in Fayette, had a large flock of Horned
Larks (+20) with a Lapland Longspur in the mix. Also had several dozen Snow

south side of Van Dyne Spoor Rd around sunset Saturday. Also had a group of

Went on the Eaton Birding Society field trip this morning. Birds of note
include several Killdeer, small flock of Snow Buntings, & a single Am. Pipit
along Yale Farm Rd between Rtes 96 & 96A in Seneca County. Also had a nice

Relaying some info that was given to me on the gyrfalcon. It seems that this
bird may have a pattern where it shows up near the corner of Seybolt & Stahl
Rds (township of Fayette) in the afternoons (around 3 PM). I had tried several
mornings (a convenient time for me) without any luck. On Thursd
Just wanted to add that I first saw the gyrfalcon at 3 PM (thanks to the couple
parked on Stahl Rd with a scope set up on it). It quickly flew south to land on
the east side of Seybolt Rd (nabbing a duck dinner on it’s way) about 200 yards
south of Stahl Rd. It stayed there for about 20 minutes,
The Gyrfalcon was on Seybolt Rd (south of Seneca Falls) around Stahl Rd. It was
first perched north of the large barns on Stahl Rd, but flew south along
Seybolt. I was able to see it capture a Mallard in mid-air and start feasting
on it. A red-tail hawk took over the kill, soon to be followed by

Just wanted to clarify the post from Lyn about the Gyrfalcon, it was county rd
121 (not route 121) that the elusive Gyrfalcon was seen (but not by me, despite
my several attempts ☹). That is also where I saw 1 of the 2 Merlin this
morning, near the quarry entrance on a wire. The other merlin was

entire Butler Creek drainage is into the Seneca River. However, another page on
that site states that the Town of Butler lies within both Lak

have a Turkey Vulture fly over downtown Waterloo. Haven’t seen them around the
fairgrounds lately (their local hangout in warmer weather, especially the water

About 8:30 Sunday morning had a Northern Shrike along Van Dyne Spoor Rd in
Savannah. It was on the north side of the road, about halfway along the open

The American Avocet was still at Eaton Marsh (aka shorebird flats) at 4:30

Found a Philadelphia Vireo on the South Spring Trail (across from the
platform/bench). Also had a few Common Yellowthroats, Belted Kingfishers, &
Cedar Waxwings. Along the drive, had a Green Heron & Virginia Rail across from
LaRue’s Lagoon, lots of juvenile Eagles, Great Egrets, G & L Yellowlegs
Thought I would include what I saw to keep with the basic purpose of the list
(no offense intended 😊). A quick drive through Sunday afternoon turned up
plenty of Common Gallinules (with chicks/young), a couple Solitary Sandpipers,
Green Herons, Caspian Terns (1 changing to non-breeding), America
Around noon Sunday, I took a short 20 minute hike on the trail located at the
northwest corner of Hemlock Lake (just past the picnic area). Had numerous

Downy Woodpeckers. As I returned to the Kiosk/parking area, I though
I just found out the Willow Ptarmigan was seen in VT before the last NY
sighting, meaning there were at least two birds far away from their normal
range. It is sad to hear that the NY bird was found dead, does anyone know the
details/cause? While I was on Point Peninsula for several hours on 4/3

long dead end off S. Shore Rd). It was on the beach side of the road about 1/2
way down towards the end. It had moved down the road from it’s earlier

It has been pointed out to me that with so much ice cover, so late in the
season, the resources found in the few open water areas are probably being
depleted rapidly. It isn’t so much low numbers of fish this year, but
I have seen reports that the Harlequin Duck in Oswego has died, no details
except that it happened about 2:30 PM while some birders were watching it. I
saw it Saturday evening and it had it’s head tucked down most of the time I was
there, moving very slowly upstream.

The raptor on your flickr page is a rough-legged hawk (note underwing shoulder
patch in flight). The Harlequin Duck was still in the Oswego River north of
post office at 5 PM. Had a short-eared owl along rte 31 Montezuma, by the
potato barn about dusk.

Along 96A in the town of Fayette, between Kime Rd and Post Rd, I have seen
“her” 3 times. Monday at 7 AM and again at 11 PM, and this morning (Wed.) about
7 AM. She is fairly heavily barred, but there has also been a much lighter owl
(male?) seen in the same area over the last month.

Near Ovid on county rd 129, south of Center St, had 2 flocks of snow buntings
(about 100 in each flock) apart 1/2 mile apart. The flock on top of a barn had
at least 1 Lapland Longspur. The other flock in a field had a few Horned Larks.
In Waterloo, at Oak Island (by the lock) a flock of 60-

Rd, along with 1 Lapland Longspur that has been with the H. Larks (near end of
Disinger Rd.). Raptors were scarce except for a couple of

31. Also found a single owl on a fence post in a pasture 2.0 miles south of
Waterloo on the west side of Rte 96 (north side of the Aunkst Rd intersection -
Peter Whitmer farm turn) (watch out for the electric fence!)
Large variety of ducks along the drive; BW Teal, GW Teal, Mallard, Black Duck,
Shoveler, Gadwall, Pintail, Ring-necked, Redhead, Coots & PB Grebes & C.
Merganser. Both Ibises were still at Benning Marsh (but had moved back into the

follow the traffic laws when on a Federal Wildlife Refuge. As I left the Ibises
at Benning about 8:30 AM, another vehicle began to follow me out, only to turn
around and drive the wrong way back to Benning Marsh so th
Since the refuge is still closed, thought I’d check some other nearby areas.
Knox-Marsellus (Towpath & East Rds. are still open) had the usual, 2 Am White
pelicans, 6 Sandhill Cranes, numerous Great Egrets, Yellowlegs (Greater?),
Peregrine Falcon, lots of Kinglets (both RC & GC), Snow Geese (
Did fairly short walks on the Esker Brook/South Spring trails at Montezuma each
of the last 3 days. Besides for dozens of yellow-rumped warblers and numerous
GC Kinglets, I’ve found Blackpoll, Magnolia, Tennessee, & Hooded Warblers. Also
had a N. Mockingbird and YB Sapsucker.

Just a couple comments about the May's Point pair. I saw my first glimpse of a
Red-headed Woodpecker on June 2nd (while on an Eaton field trip). It was only a
brief glimpse before it was chased off by blackbirds, wasn't 100% sure (not
having heard of any in the area) so I didn't report it.

Knox-Marsellus is still the hot place to go, but Tschache Pool had some nice
views (Eagles, Osprey, Willow Flycatcher family, etc.) The Am White Pelican is
still around the east end of the first pond. A few (3 or 4) Phalaropes
(Red-necked?) are also towards the NW corner in the little "inlets".
If you can’t find a home for your stuff, you could try the Village Camera Shop
(routes 5 & 20 on west side of Seneca Falls). They might buy it off you, could
pay the cost of gas to get there anyway. A lot of drugstores (Rite Aid?) will
still scan slides and put them on CD for so much apiece.

Cayugabirds-L List I
I posted this on the Eaton Birds fb page, thought I’d put it up here too. I am
thinking of entering a new team (recreational category) in the Montezuma
Muckrace this year. The catch is that I want to count only birds that we can
photograph (or video record).
I’m looking for anyone intereste
Just passing on - an American White Pelican has been at Knox-Marselus
(Montezuma) all afternoon. Best viewed from East Rd near the middle of the
marsh in a few clumps of brush (to the left of the large group of
cattails/brush). Also Black Terns all over Tschache, May’s Point, & K-M pools.

Had a quick glimpse of a red-headed woodpecker on S. Mays Point Rd (across from
fishing access) about 11 AM Sunday. It was getting mobbed by blackbirds and
didn’t stay around long.

Friday afternoon was dark and rainy but lots of Dunlin, Semipalmated Plovers,
and other peeps around. The Glossy Ibis was in easy viewing at Benning Marsh
(directly across from the pull-out). It took off as an adult Eagle flew over,
but circled around and landed in the same area.

Sat morning on the Esker Brook trail (Montezuma) had Yellow, Yellow-rump, Palm
(not seen by me, but saw photo), and a Hooded Warbler. Also had usual variety,
RC Kinglets, Song, Swamp, Tree Sparrows, and others.
