This an mpeg1 file? Purple artifacts sounds a lot like some problems mpeg4 codecs like xvid have with certain versions. Maybe the hd on the laptop needs chkdsk /f, and the file got corrupted? Try running the movie through this program. It can spot some problems, and tell you a bit about the movie.
