The problem with keeping score is not with the kids, but with the adults (in my experience from years as a ref). If the parents can avoid getting over-competitive ('cause, you know, whether the 5 year old won his soccer game matters to him a lot) then there's no problem keeping score.

Younger kids (under 10) are Cub Scouts. 10 year olds are Webelos. 11 and up are Boy Scouts. Cub scouts seldom participate in organized overnight campouts. Seldom handle sharp things, and seldom handle firearms. Boy Scouts often do all of the above. The level of involvement is completely up to

it really does bring a sense of civic responsibility to a youth. they may not even realize it for a decade or so, when they refer to men/women as sir/mam. i learned some of the best worst traits of being human for the scouts. the groups i was affiliated with where very much into survival
