*what* needed to be full text indexed and couldn't find anything, then
I looked at the DBs that had been created programmatically and saw

I had the same issue with the initial installation/creation of the
Shared Service Provider (SSP) called for in the initial install
procedures. I couldn't get MySites of Search to run.

Sharepoint isn't just an app, it is a framework. It isn't just ODBC to get
some data, it is the complete integration of the system.
The Integration with e-mail, outlook, MS Office. All of those things.

It's a .NET thing. Basically the page is compiled the first time it is hit,
It can then Cache to RAM or disk, and after that the pages should come up
very quickly.

installation was a bitch, but once the server is up and running it's a
pretty nice lil' product.
