I think the person that wrote it is an idiot.
(S)he is an idiot for the statement. An idiot for not realizing that the
soldier hasn;t a lot of choice. And an idiot for using the company's email
to make that statement.
I think the company of the person that wrote it are idiots for employing
him.her.
There is no "process" to work through. If you want your company to survive
this, you publicly fire the individual responsible, and immediately issue an
apology to the Sgt, the US military, etc. Then maybe send his unit some free
mats as token of your apology.

Companies just have not yet grasped the speed of these Internets. Your
reputation can be trashed in a day or two of non-response.
For me, this is a lesson to be taken seriously.
Not much argument there. But that is a dif
ponse only creates the perception that you somehow
think that the company was in some way in the right, which it clearly
wasn't.
