Here's a pic of the flooding. Incredible.

Yeah... I'm sure it's not like wading in chest high water in a pool or
in the ocean... debris floating around, unknown objects on the ground
that you can't see, fences (which could be a problem if it's just not
tall enough to break the surface), etc. etc...
the one that got me was dozens of
I've been in a flood. My home was far enough away from the river that I was
fine, but several friends' homes were condemned

I still can't get in touch with my friend that's down there. I heard on CNN
that the Verizon cell tower is down, and I'm not sure if she uses Verizon or
if all the cell phone lines are just totally jammed. Sucks to not be able to
contact a loved one.
My sympathy. I went through this after the London bombings with my
dad. You *think* she's probably ok, but it sucks not to *know.*
Hopefully they will restore communications soon. I hear there is a lot
of infrastructure damage though.
Do you perhaps have a mutual friend down there?

She's the only one I know down there. If I can't get through by tonight, I'm
probably going to call her parents.

I'm watching it on the web now.
And it sounds like things have suddenly gotten a lot worse.

Well it looks like the worst of the storm is over and as bad as it is,
it's fortunately looking not as bad as the news was predicting. That's
not saying much for the buildings that were totally smashed and the
homes under 6 feet of water, but I was hearing predictions of 20ft
flooding.

It was mostly hype.
All this talk about it reaching far inland and stuff.
Once it hits the coast, it dies out.
And I think we can all agree that its HIT the coast ;-)
I think it's our little caribbean islands that are dwarfed by the size
of the hurricane itself that have to worry about it going
I dunno about *hype*... it sounds as though there is extensive damage,
but some of the scenarios this morning were of thirty feet of trapped
water and thousands of deaths. It may not be total annihilation but it
sounds pretty bad. Just saw something about oil rigs adrift... anyone
know about this?
umm...
They spoke about close to a million homeless in one report.
That's Hype.

if New Orleans had been wiped out? um, no it's not. There's half a
million people inside the city limits alone. Louisiana is a swamp,
extensive flooding is very much in the picture.

They had death estimates in the tens of thousands! I don't know what
it will work out to be, but I'm thinking the mandatory evacuation
saved a lot of lives.
And while it's certainly lost a lot of power, it's still going to drop
a LOT of rain far inland. I'm hearing of flood warnings in cities
Hmm..
maybe I should stop watching 'Costumes Sold' numbers and turn on the news.

Well the death estimates were before the storm hit. So part of the
hype, or at least fear.
I had the CNN coverage on all day on a usually muted multicast stream.
They had some wild clips. Early on there was a woman reporter on
location that was trying to stand up to the wind and not winning. She
right, the fact that it wasn't a direct hit doesn't mean that the
horrendous scenarios circulating for a direct hit were exaggerated.
Thirty-foot floods and thousands of people unable to evacuate is not a
recipe for a happy ending.

Oh my god that movie had some grade-school physics and geography
errors... like when he draws a line across the map and says evacuate
everyone below this line and says it's too late to help anyone
else... and the vice president says It's easy for him to say that
while he's safe here in Washington
What's happening with this storm? I've had my head down in coding and
relaunching a site, and I'm only just starting to read about it.
A State is being evacuated or something?
According to CNN New Orleans is being evacuated... direct hit
anticipated with a Category 5 strength.

That's crazy. I always thought New Orleans was pretty far inland.
Won't it diminish in strength drastically by then, once it hits land?

We should just get scraped by it (we being Lafayette), although I'm

Not only is New Orleans right on the water, they're in a basin below
sea level... It's been expected for some years that the city's just
been waiting for
