Anyone know a free usenet feed out there? I'm just looking for some of the
civil war feeds but its not worth paying giganews the monthly fee since
that's all I'm looking to watch.

Easynews.com is another nice one for binaries.
They hvae some very neat systems whereby you can click on PAR files and get
a full list of all the files in a binary set, click another button to have
them all Zipped into one for you to download.
There's also a comprehensive Search engine as well w

ISPs have effectively killed Usenet. Too bad, in a way, but it is old
technology.

I pay a fee. Don't know of any good free ones.

and not so much quick-created-and-abandoned groups.

Oh - and about when I said P2P was "easier" - that's relative as well. The new
UseNet Explorer is FREAKIN' AMAZING.
Just grab the whole mess of a binary post and it downloads the parts and
decodes them. If it finds an error it automatically downloads the PARs,
repairs it

Whoops, just realized some of my math was wrong. At a 1:1 ratio, each
client would send 700mb and also receive 700mb. That doubles both
numbers.

I'm not sure I totally agree.

"At a time" perhaps... but that's nearly constant (at least in action games).

Yeah, that's the difference. If I pull from my ISP's usenet feed (TWC, so
not much longer, doh!), my traffic never hits the open Internet, it's all
over the cable. Now, I would be interested to see what the bandwidth metrics
are on TWC's internal network. I would expect usenet

I assumed that USENet would make a stronger showing (and still assume that it
does outside the US) but am very suprised at the anemic showing of online games

You are not going to find free binary groups (AFAIK)
You are not going to find a general set of free newsgroups.
You can find specific areas of the usenet tree free, but we'll need
the groups you want to read to figure out where they might be free.

anyone know of any good free UseNet news servers?

Definitely. For downloading I have 2 servers and between them they bring the
100 Mbps ethernet port to its knees. I really need to figure out a way to team
the 2 NICs so I can have 200 Mbps bandwidth
