A text input form field will always be defined, even if it's empty. Try:
The LEN will eval to 0 if the form field is empty, kicking it to your else
statement.

I am not sure where to start, but know how to end this procedure which is

I think the process is something like:
1. Receive XML document
2. Parse it on the server using some 3rd party XML parser
3. Use WDDX to get that info into CF

connection CF has to make.
Look at the execution time of your queries. Look at CFX tags and COM objects.
