I believe lacquer is was the standard in the sixties and early seventies.

According to my SS restoration guide - All 64 - 72 Chevelle's were painted
in lacquer from the factory. The nice thing about lacquer is it's quick
drying - so paint flaws
Factory GM paint for that era was acrylic lacquer. Acrylic Enamel
didn't start until sometime in the mid 70's I think.
