Quick recap - car runs like crap (350/TH350 combo), have diagnosed it as a vacuum leak somewhere on the passenger side of the carb base.
I found a thicker carb
Yeah, but when they're tuned properly, ain't nothin' better!!

Took the car for a drive and got the temp up to 180*, and noticed that the car was running very rough below 1200 RPM, but I could keep it at about 800 if I worked the gas pedal like a fiend.

Sounds like you may just have a vacuum leak. Could be a bad hose, like to the distributor or the big one to the brake booster. Check all those, and maybe even block them all off and check your timing and lastly the idle mixture on
