RE: [Chevelle-list] Numbers
As noted,
its been discussed on TC several times and consensus (plus looking at
a lot of 66/67 Chevelles
Looking at my 66 Chevelle from the back, with the
trunk lid out of the way, in the top left and top right corners of the trunk
opening, there is a number stamped into the sheetmetal, right next to where the
trunk seal would go...
Is this a partial VIN stamp, or is it just the
fender part
It's just a number--has nothing to do with whether it's a SS or Malibu or
even the part #. There was a thread on TC about this a while
back.

I don't think it cost them anything more to stamp the panels
when they were made. It was possibly an identifier stamp for Fisher
body to know whether it was to go on a 2 door, 4 door, or
convertible.BillLAt 01:47 PM 10
was just curious...

Looks like a part number to me, and of
course the part number would indicate whether it's for a 2dr or 4dr. If anyone
has one of those old crash parts books the answer to whether or not it is a part
number would be there.

Ah yes, but it may be indicative of 2dr vs. 4-door
Each
number has been found numerous times on

John,
In
reply to your last question [Can you see them w/o
sanding off the paint?] I've uploaded a picture of an SS clone that was offered
on eBay some months ago. I can't tell if the third digit is a 6 or 8...

That
ebay one looks like the RH side. Could that last digit be a 4? Its hard to
tell with the paint on.
Still, a crash parts book would contain the answer to whether or not
it's a part number.

Maybe some 66/67 300/300 Deluxeowners could check their trunk areas and let us know if anything is stampedthere…133xx, 134xx, 136xx, etc.
I own both a 66 Malibu and a 66 SS, no 300 or 300 Deluxe. When I got them both were original unmolestedcars. The body stamps in the corner of the trunk on my
thinking about it, its awful tempting..

Could be a mix-up at the factory. I think for registration purposes, as
long as the VIN tag and title match. I've never had anyone look at the cowl
tag for registration
