Ron,
If you like the navigation app iNavX, then that runs well even on the first
generation iPads, as well as the later ones. To supply a GPS signal, there are
various units that plug into the charging port of the iPad. Here are the
ones listed on the iNavX website:

Over the years, we've discussed enlarging existing holes in hulls or
decks. With a large existing hole, the pilot bit in a hole saw has nothing
to center itself with. There are two decent ways to do that.
First, you can use two hole saws on one arbor (mandrel) if the arbor has

I have a iPad 2 with both wifi and cellular capability. For about a decade, any

because of the E911 system.
My iPad is not connected to cellular, and the GPS works just fine.

There is a third way. Similar to your second. Take a piece of 3/4
plywood and cut the size of hole you want with your hole saw. Next take
this template and hot glue or clamp it where you want to enlarge the hole.

Well, I have been trying to get through this huge thread Jim graciously dug
up for us, and while only half through, was hoping to see what sort of
commentary there is today on the fellow on the Clipper Race who had a nice
tether, but didn't bother to clip the other end to the boat.
My order was shipped yesterday and is scheduled for delivery for today! It

Poli-Glow you either love it or hate it. We used it for a number of years
then switched back to good old wax. Poli-Glow looks good the the first few
years. Probably requires stripping very 4 or 5 years. You must follow the
directions exactly. Clean with Poli-prep. then numerous thin coats of
The first year, it is a bit of a job. You will need to remove all old
wax and other contaminants embedded in the gelcoat. The gelcoat must be
completely free of old wax, and especially any traces of old compound
that have been rubbed into the surface. Poli-Glow will not adhere to old
residues
True, Bill. You did send some. The carbide bits work well. I've used
them but they require a steady hand which I don't have.
I've also used rasps.
However, if the deck or hull is thick, a hole saw is quicker.

Agree with Bill, it's easy and it looks good. Last year I stripped the hull
down to bare gelcoat again and built up 8-10 layers of Poli Glow. It was
still easier than wax/buff. The average year is a walk in the park.

I have been using Poli-glow for about 6 years. Get the hull very clean and get
the oxidation off before you start (use their cleaner and don't skimp with the
effort). Then apply as needed - it takes about six coats before it starts
looking good and a couple more makes it look really good. The

It is now an ABYC requirement for all new boats, and surveyors will note
their presence/absence on resale. An insurer might require them going
forward.
Necessary? No. My boat sails well without them! Heck, I remember when

Hey Edd,
I wouldn't put one GFCI inline from the shore power. It would need to be
large and expensive (2 pole, 30 amp) as you will end up
running everything through it including the heating element in the hot
water heater and your battery charger. Also, many modern battery chargers

John,
I am a Poli-Glow user and have been for the past 6 or 7 years. It makes my
boat shine. The annual maintenance coats are easy to apply. I've
compounded several boats and have had good results, but with 28 year old
gelcoat, Poli-Glow is just too easy to pass up. We always get good
I've been using Nu-Finish on all my stuff for years. Easy to apply, I only use
a buffer on the big boat 'cause my arm gets tired. Advertised as once a year on
cars, seems to do the trick for me.
