I find the remaned b zeus2 units sold by defender are good value and I
found their support excellent.

I generally leave mine in day mode also. The AUTO mode shifts from day to night
colors at the official time of sunset, not at the end of nautical twilight, and
it is still pretty bright then and night mode is hard to see.

I might be a candidate, depending on when they expired. I have like 6 expired
flares and a couple of expired smokes on the boat… in addition to the current
Solas stuff. I might replace the VERY old ones with your NOT-so-so-very-old
ones.

When I was a kid the highlight of the summer was shooting off all the
25mm flares that were expired or close to it on 4th of July. I always
thought anyone in actual distress on the 4th would get applause for
shooting off flares, but no help LOL. WAY back in the day when we bought

Boy, I have probably 50-100 expired flares. I'm not sure that I can
ship that many.
I have been trying to make contacts with the local Coast Guard to have a
session on the White Lake Pier to fire flares. How many of you have
actually used a flare? Most people don't realize the slag that
Mystic Seaport collects expired flares to use to start the steam boiler on

Mike,
There may be two display adjustments you want to look at, Colors Mode and
Background. The background is similar to contrast. Between the two
adjustments, you may tweak the display to your liking.

I've switched, but I also have SOLAS flares on board. (Anyone want a dozen

Around here, they ban the use of heaters and go around and unplug power
cords from unattended boats.

Our boat yard mandates all flares, propane and gas cylinders be taken off the
boats when stored on the hard. Boats are tightly packed and a fire on one
could cause a very nasty mess. Much of this likely has to do with insurance
for the marina

I switched over to the electronic flare, after replacing expired flares over
and over. I can’t speak as to its effectiveness, as my goal is to never to have
a need to use it.

I never do that, partly because I am in the water and possibly sailing and
partly because being cold doesn’t seem to hurt them.
BTW – anyone switched to the electronic flare? IMHO it will pay for itself
quickly, but I can’t imagine it would do anything at all as a distress signal.

You take the flares off the boat? Do they have problems with freezing?

It is only about three button presses to change it from Day Colors, Night

Day/night mode is usually selectable. The Garmin GPSMap 500/700 series can
be set to Day/Night/Auto.

mine in "Day Colors" mode and manually switch it as desired.

Maybe a tinted lexan screen could be used to drop the intensity down?

If your 740 works similarly to my 420, there should be an option to set the
display to Day, Night, or Auto. Auto is default.
Unfortunately, I cannot verify this as the boat is winterized (batteries off,

Yes Garmin GPSMAP 740 does the same. It often does this just as we are
navigating tricky areas and suddenly the dimness makes it very difficult to
read. Switching the light blue to dark blue also causes difficulty. I am one
person who does not like the automatic switching and would rather
