Another option would be to fly into STT (usually pretty inexpensive) and

clearing customs into/out of the BVIs. Groceries are less than a block from

For provisioning - Rich is right. Take a cab to Bobby's in town and do
your provisioning there. If you're out of the Moorings/Sunsail base, it's
an easy shot in a cab. If you've got a dinghy, zip across the harbour to
Village Cay and then you can walk up to Bobby's. If you're out of Nanny
Cay,

Good idea Fred.
My 11 year old, now 15, did the DR plot like that we did the Caribbean
1500. He'd also log other notes along the way such as where we caught a
fish, went swimming (yes, we did the mid-ocean lap around the boat) or
spotted dolphins. We still have the chart and it's a pretty cool

Curt,
Call me a snob, but I would not rent a Bene because I would be frustrated at
its sailing performance. If it has in-mast furling it is even worse. Find

Everything else is simple, line of site, and well marked.

Chances are, the charter company will give you a placemat with a “chart” of the
BVIs before your charter, if the boat doesn’t have a chart aboard (unlikely).
Kinda like the map the rental car companies give you when you check out a
rental car. You can pretty much see everything from everything

If you have to buy one, buy a GPS. Keep in mind that anyone you buy would
require maps, so add the cost.
If you go with a tablet, I suggest, you better research the apps that are
available and figure out which one is good enough for you. I would not rely on
the tablet alone, they are obviously

Curtis: Seailing around the BVI is a navigation non-event. All you need is a
paper chart and a pair of binoculars. Everything you do there will be within

I'm pretty sold on my 2nd generation iPad. I have to confess that I haven't
pulled a paper chart out since I got it about 18,000 miles ago. Just make
sure it's 3G or 4G enabled and you can download iNavX or (for the BVI)
Navionics. The GPS function is excellent as are the charts. If it was
