If memory serves me right, that particular (in-hull) transducer can be
adjusted (turned around) to accommodate the curvature of the hull.

That works or just out Vaseline on the transducer. It will last for years.
Anyplace close to centerline.

If you have two unused through hull transducers, why not replace one of them
with a new through hull instead of using an in hull unit?

Well I have the mid-1980's ray-marine st50 depth and paddle wheel
transducers mounted in the through holes. the guy at Garmin could not
tell me the dim- size but told me the 1" 1/2 I have now was defiantly
too small. So he told me it would not work? I’m not sure. I would hope

The paddle wheel speed transducer has the temperature sensor in it, so if you
want temp and standby depth, you will need both units. The sizing is easily
solved by either boring or shimming of the existing hole.

The paddle wheel speed transducer no longer works.
I was thinking of taking it out and using the garmin depth in its spot.
Just on the other side on the center line of the boat is the st50
depth gauge sensor.'
I was thinking of keeping so I would have back up depth. Or maybe
finding a used paddle
Whatever works for you. Don't let the hole size become a problem. It's not.

Dave,
The area where my tranducers are installed (under the v-berth, aft of the
holding tank) is not cored. I found that the area under the galley sink is
also not cored (where the sink drains are), but that's no good to you for a
transducer.
