was a beautiful day, mostly sunny though I ran into a little rain halfway

I saw American Dipper in the Arkansas River on the way up and two in river

I was late to chase this rarity--9 days after it was first reported--
but despite low odds I got up at 4:30 am Monday and drove a big loop
through Jumbo, Ovid, Julesburg, Sand Draw, Holyoke, Haxton to Sterling

At about 3 pm, on my way out of town, I thought that the horse stables at Dry
Gulch Road and US 34 might be worth a peek. For most of May-Oct, this spot
swarms with blackbirds, including Yellow-headed this spring.
In any case, there were but three blackbirds there this afternoo

Chris Wood tells me the Pomarine Jaeger is still at Chatfield with a 1st cycle
Thayer's Gull, 3 Common Loons and 1 Pacific Loon. I was able to get a few pics
of the jaeger yesterday and Saturday after waiting for him to come in close.
Did anyone photograph it feeding on the Ring-billed Gull?

First time back of my house & on peanut feeder -- BUSHTITS -- a flock of 6 or so --very pink on head and even sides -- quite a surprise, as I've not seen them here before this morning.

Folks- My folks are seeing 7 swans right now, all adult, at Barr Lake. They
are being seen looking west from the Niedrach Trail towards the observation
platform. They are tentatively IDing them as Trumpeter Swans, though looks are
distant for now.
Also present are thousands of geese including
Bill Kaempfer, Tom Wilberding, and I once saw a Pomerine take out a Franklin's
Gull at Jackson Reservoir. I've heard a similar story about a Pom taking out a
Laughing Gull from Steve Mlodinow. The experience we had at Jackson was pretty
gruesome. Jaegers and Skuas don't have talons to grasp pre

First stop was Loveland Ski Area to do a few runs and say hi to the Gray
Jays.
Next we headed to Garfield County to check on waterfowl. The pond at the
Mamm Creek exit had six REDHEAD, two COMMON GOLDENEYE and a BELTED

This morning (Sunday) I birded the area west of Valco Ponds parking lot and
found 6 Rusty Blackbirds on a gravel bar in the Arkansas River midway between
the parking lot and the hatchery ponds. They were quite georgeous in the sun,
showing a lot of rust color, pale eyebrows, yellow eyes, and vel

the gull tried get away from the Pomarine. It didn't have a chance.
Fascinating to watch. Very unexpected. We figured a RBgull is only 6 oz
smaller.
