No rare birds in this story but I wanted to tell it anyway.
A Canada goose had gotten his legs entangled in fishing line. It had gone on
for several days before I heard about it so, by then, he was starting to lose
ground. He was able to maneuver enough to get into the air and then the pond,

So, nothing about that should be a surprise but I was surprised
nonetheless when I heard a ruckus from a mother mallard and looked to see a
red
tailed hawk with a duckling on the side of the pond at my house. I'm used to
seeing the ducklings become hapless bait to herons but not red tailed
I was browsing through a 1974 National Geographic Magazine when an article
titled "Can the Cooper's Hawk Survive?" caught my eye. It was written by
Noel Snyder, PhD with photographs by his wife, Helen. They did a study about
the hawk and the effects on DDT on their eggshells. It spanned sever

Wild Bird Rehab Center had 3000 birds pass through it's doors last

Claire Montour and I went to Belmar at noon today and happened upon the
gray flycatcher, as described on previous posts, at the north end of the

Ok, so I don't know the whole scoop about what's going on but, in reading
the reprimand, I see mention of birders possibly walking up a road if they
can't park on it. Yikes! It seems that this is a public road and is there a
situation where it isn't ok for a birder to walk up a road? I don't
John Hammer has noted that he is seeing the owl in his yard in Littleton

people started watching him. Because of this, he requests that visits be

A friend living near C 470 and Platte Canyon called about an owl in his
yard. He had been having trouble with heavy amts of bird droppings on his
mailbox since this summer and, tiring of it, went to chase the bird out of his
pine tree. To his surprise, it was a little owl perched about 8 ft
On Channel 9 news tonight, they showed a picture of radar that showed what
was reported as masses of birds following a cold front across the eastern
U.S. Ahead of the cold front minimal activity, behind the cold front, lots
of activity. Kathy Sabine reported that a new type of Doppler radar

I wanted to add a note to Hugh's post. I volunteer at the rehab center
when I can. Debbie does amazing work and is still incredibly busy. When I was
there on Sat, she had a sora with a bad wing (and eating earth worms like a
champ!), a Swainson's hawk (quickly on it's way to the raptor rehab
Well, I also agree with everything Scott and Tina said. What a tragic,
senseless loss of a person who added so much to our community.
According to Debbie at the Wild Bird Rehab Center, there are no plans for a
funeral at Candace's request but there are ideas to have a birding walk around

I've been thinking about the whole "fire as a natural and often helpful
force in nature". Although I agree with this philosophy in many ways, I would
put forth that the preexisting loss of habitat disproportionately
increases the importance of these areas to the animals dependant upon them.
Hi, Dave. I'm going to give you the email address and phone number to my

going on.
You'll see that I included his email address above, his phone

I saw a bird flying around the edges of the open water on the pond where I
live today. Looked very much like a spotted sandpiper to me. Anyone seen
sandpipers around this time of year, esp recently?

The best place to call is the Wild Bird rehab center. They are now open
all winter and are very helpful. Their number is 303-751-5385.
Here's an email they just sent out with a link to their website.

I saw approx 150 sand hill cranes flying over Castlewood Canyon at 3:30 pm
today. It was great! I agree with Hugh's post about the leaves and general
beauty of the area, it was gorgeous. I would add scads of robins to Hugh's
posting.

Somewhere in the depths of my address book is the email address for the

I live on some ponds in Littleton. In the winter we have a large goose
population and with them come the droppings. The latest attempt of the board
to banish the geese is to install pulsating lights on and around the pond
that will frighten the geese and keep them from staying.

I don't know a lot about grackles but I remember hearing that the reason
that corvids took such a hit with West Nile was their tendency to eat the
brains, along with other things I'm sure, from other birds. I would think
that there are nutrients they get from this consumption.
