More than 40 hearty Colorado birders turned out yesterday for the Barr Lake
CBC. In temperatures soaring from 8 degrees up to 13, birders peered
through fog and occasional blowing snow to detect 66 species of birds. Few
rarities were found and poor visibility due to fog kept the number of
I spent about three hours at Barr Lake this afternoon. The lake is about
75% frozen. Open areas had abundant geese coming and going (Snow, Cackling
and Canada seen) and the normal duck suspects. I also had one male
Barrow's Goldeneye quite a ways out on the water (with some Commons).

I didn't have my scope with me, since I hadn't planned on going to Barr. I
just ended up there. If anyone feels like sorting through a lot of white
geese, there are dozens of them all over the park; both in and out of the
water. If someone said there were 50 there, I wouldn't argue.

After viewing the Red Phalarope etc on Tower Road this morning, we visited
Barr Lake where we found an intermediate phase juvenile Pomarine Jaeger in the
NW corner of the lake and a Cattle Egret around the bridge to the boat launch
(in the NE corner).
We then went to Cherry Creek Reservoir
The Red Phalarope previously reported by Doug Faulkner in the NW corner of the
lake (near RMBO) was still present Wednesday afternoon.
In addition a Pacific Loon was near the boat launch in the NE corner of the
lake.

Hi all,
I made a quick trip to Barr Lake SP, Adams County, over my lunch break today in
search of the Red Phalarope reported yesterday. It was in the northwest corner
about 200 meters from the dam. The park entrance at the Rock Mountain Bird
Observatory is closest to where I saw the bird.
Nothing exceptional to note, although the Nashville Warblers (2) are still
there. Both in the brush along the canal between the banding station and
the Pioneer trail. Other birds today included:
Common Yellowthroat, Wilson's, Townsend's MacGillaray's, and Orange-crowned
Warblers
I made it out to Barr Lake this afternoon and I thought I was having a good
day. Then I read Meredith's post. Apparently, some of the good birds that
I found were caught earlier in the morning, so none of them have any
stealth capabilities whatsoever. No wonder I was able to find them all.
I enjoyed a lovely few hours in the sun today at Barr Lake. Birds of note
included 1 Cordilleran Flycatcher, 1 Gray FC, and two slightly early
migrant Nashville Warblers (the NAWA are on the boat ramp side of the
park in the ditch). There were also MANY Yellow Warblers around (mostly
Mark C. and I birded Barr lake this morning. things are still pretty slow, low
numbers.
Best birds were common poor-will, Red- headed woodpecker, Orchard orioles.
No Grosbecks, Vireos and only a few YeWa and yellow -rumps.

Per Bill K's directions, easily located the Barr Lake area Snowy Owl this

Birders,
Today we did our monthly bird walk at Barr Lake. There were NO Western
Tanager's (they were everywhere else) or many migrants to speak of. The
best birds were:
Common Loon (alternate plumage)
Winter Wren (near the end of the Niedrach trail at the east end of the

Barr Lake is picking up just a bit. There were more Yellow Warblers,

As opposed to most Colorado CBCs this year, the Barr Lake count witnessed a
drop in number of species. Only 63 species were recorded versus 71 in 2010, 69
in 2009 and 76 in 2008. A good part of the reason for that was that Barr Lake
itself was almost completely frozen and that caused diving
