the marina open water on the pier side.
Before the storm on Wed we found a pacific loon in a small open spot by the

Today, Saturday the 11th, I thought I would check out the shorebirds
reported at Chatfield SP. I knew it was not the best day or the best time
(11:30 AM) but was not prepared for two lines of cars from the highway to
the gate house even with two people working outside to sell admissions. Nor

I made my first visit to the newly opened areas of Chatfield SP yesterday,
and my first to explore the rich area of the Platte upstream of Kingfisher
Bridge, to see a little bit of what happened with vegetation management and
the birds. Flooding on both the Douglas and Jefferson sides limits access

There has been some exciting birds at Chatfield both yesterday and today!
Three jaegers have been offering good study for those who are patient and
interested. Photos of all three birds identify them to two species.
Long-tailed Jaeger and Parasitic Jaeger. Tony Leukering promises to
I visited Chatfield State Park from 1:00 to 2:30 today, didn't really dig
in but observed some slightly different things due to weather.
Douglas Co:
-Western Tanagers in high numbers, some flocking/feeding with Mountain
Bluebirds. An odd but nice visual combo.

Today's DFO "Big Month" field trip to Chatfield SP and a few other places
rounded up some 87 species, adding at least 18 new ones to the DFO "Big
Month" tally.
A pre-dawn extension of the trip enjoyed 4 *Common Poorwills* at the Dakota
Formation hogback as heard from the Cathy Johnson Trail, and a
Pre-dawn stops produced 4 *Common Poorwills* at Cathy Johnson Trail near
Deer Creek Road and South Valley Park, and 1 *poorwill *near Mann Reservoir
in South Valley Park. The wetland area near the south end of the park
had 6 *Wilson's
Snipe* winnowing and chipping (very cool) and 1 *Virginia Rail*.
I was at Chatfield SP soon after sunrise this morning. Here are some

this morning, just south of the North Boat Launch parking area (JeffCo).

Trailmark Lake (JeffCo) had a moderate cross section of ducks, including 3

About 2:30 pm I relocated one of the Long-tailed Ducks reported yesterday from
the handicapped fishermans area by the marina. The bird was way out with the
hordes of common mergs. One bonapartes gull flew around. I also saw a leucistic

Three birders from the south (two from El Paso Co. and me from Pueblo Co.),
came north to walk around the lovely Chatfield Botanical Gardens on this lovely

Went to Chatfield to look for the SB Dowitcher. I did not see it but I am
confident that I heard it about 11 am. I was out on the spit and heard a
clear tu-tu-tu towards the east. The call matched the call on the Sibley

While kayaking the flooded forest of Plum Creek, in Chatfield State Park
today, I found two singing Red-Eyed Vireos. The first was on the northeast
corner of the Plum Creek Picnic Area, and the other was about 200 meters
northeast of that in the forest. You could probably hear them singing
there is a yellow billed cuckoo calling along with the yellow throated Vario at
the gravel pond / scuba Ponds at Chatfield.

Near mid-day the gull flock South Platte Reservoir (resting on ice in
Arapahoe) had 1 3rd cycle *Lesser Black-backed*, 1 1st cycle *Glaucous*,
and 3 *Thayer's* (1 adult, 2 first cycle), along with the Ring-billeds and
Herrings. I had a possible candidate 1st cycle Iceland, too, but it soon
wandered

To
Unable to find the Yellow-billed Loon on Chatfield Reservoir this afternoon, I
settled for a drake Barrow's Goldeneye and two Common Loons near the
northwestern picnic area ( it is near the northwest boat launch). Viewing
conditions were marginal at best and the Y-b Loon could easily be too far

I drove down to Chatfield Reservoir this morning 12/14. Snow was falling in
wet, heavy flakes, but it wasn't especially cold. I checked around the swim
beach and Massey Draw for loons without success, then went to the picnic
area near the dam. There was the loon, in with the coots.
On Dec. 11, at Chatfield Reservoir State Park, the Red-necked Grebe was seen
in Jefferson County, near the dam, with Western Grebes. This bird really moves
around the lake to different locations.
On 12/12, at Fort Logan Cemetery I saw 1, immature Greater White-fronted Goose.

I went to look for the Red-necked Grebe at Chatfield, which I did not find, but
I saw lot's of other Grebes. From the Douglas County side, I had around 32
Eared Grebes in a group, then there was a separate group of 12 Pied-billed
Grebe, and lastly another separate group of 30 Western Grebes. I c

Went back to Chatfield Reservoir this morning, hoping something new blew
in, but by the looks of it, not much did, except Goldeneye numbers bumped
up quite a bit. At the Marina sand spit an adult *Greater White-fronted
Goose* flew in with a flock of Canadas. A female *Red-breasted Mergan
I checked Chatfield Reservoir from a handful of vantage points. No loon or
scoters in evidence, but waterfowl numbers and variety had increased a good
bit from my visit one week ago. There were now *Redhead*, *Canvasback*, *Lesser

An adult *Mew Gull* was at Chatfield reservoir this morning in the South
Platte arm of the lake. When I saw it from the old heron overlook it was
resting amid a large grebe flock, and then flew up and around and I was not
able to determine where it ended up. Probably still around there somewhere,
