Today I deiced to head to a different Jeffco park. Centennial Cone, in
Clear Creek Canyon. I parked at the West Trailhead and hiked a part of Elk
Ridge Trail. On the way back I found two
*Lewis's Woodpeckers. *
I found them in a gully area with several cottonwoods, some dead and a few
alive.
To Each and All,
We see Lewis's Woodpecker approximately once a month as we pass downstream
along Highway 12 parallel to the Cuchara River (which is not much more than
a creek--please don't tell anyone else!) to La Veta.
We have seen that species now twice at our home. Last year, a single

A single Lewis's Woodpecker was still present along the Mesa Trail south of
Boulder this afternoon. We watched it from 1:17 to 1:32 in the giant lone
cottonwood skeleton west of the trail, visible as you hike north on the
trail, rising from the creek past the two story stone building. Easy to
Two weeks I was camping at Vega Lake State Park and saw 2 Lewis'
Woodpeckers. One was on a fence post maybe 10 feet from the dirt road.
Also there were a number of Violet-Green swallows, plus a family of
Mountain Bluebirds. As a recent transplant to CO, the bluebirds were a
special treat.

Hi
On June 30, Courtney Schultz alerted all us on Cobirds that there were Lewis’s
Woodpeckers at Hewlett Gulch, along the Poudre River in Larimer Co. Today I
spent a few early morning hours audio recording those woodpeckers. If anyone is
interested in either photographing. recording or just
During lunch today, our Audubon bird class watched a flycatching woodpecker
at the Audubon Nature Center. Through a scope we confirmed it as a Lewis's. It
perched in the top of a noticeable dead tree well into the Denver Waterboard
property, and flew out every minute or three in a

Had a flyover Lewis's woodpecker at Cheyenne Mountain SP this afternoon. I was
about a hundred yards west on the Zook Loop. It looked like it landed in some
of the Gamble oaks near the parking lot, but I wasn't able to find it. Haven't
seen one at this location since 2008.

Thanks for the location. I was able to relocate the Lewis's Woodpecker quite
quickly this morning in the tree in the back of the parking lot.

Yesterday in the town of Buena Vista (Chaffee Co) I went to a place where
Joey Kellner had shown me Lewis's Woodpecker a couple winters ago. I saw
two during my short afternoon visit. Also present were over 100 raucous
Pinon Jays, foraging from ground to coniferous to deciduous, making more
On my daily birding/newspaper buying walk in Estes Park this morning, I was
amazed to find a handsome male Lewis's Woodpecker posing in a dead ponderosa
pine along Mary's Lake Road just uphill from the intersection with Lower
Broadview Road. I got a quick, out-of-focus picture before it flew
Hi all
Last night we spotted a Lewis's Woodpecker, of all birds, on the west side
of Nunn as you come into town along Weld CR 100 on north side. If you
arrive from the west (from Wellington) there is a house on your south as
you go past Weld 27 (Raptor Alley). We saw it land on the thick
This afternoon (1/25) I was surprised to see a *Lewis's Woodpecker* flew
into a cottonwood along Massey Draw upstream of Valley Parkway in Ken Caryl
Valley. After a time it flew off toward the north.A hatch-year *Harris's

Hello friends.
Twas a magnificent day today in the foothills of Boulder County, both birdwise
and weatherwise! First sighting of the day was a terrific aerial view of a
Lewis's woodpecker flying eastward a few hundreds south of the parking lot.
Didn't ever see it land as it disappeared over
The Lewis's Woodpecker first reported yesterday along the northern edge of
Roselawn Cemetery continues as of noon today (Monday, 9/24).
Roselawn is about a mile west of I-25 on the north side of Mulberry (= SR14).
It is accessed from the frontage road on the north side of Mulberry, with the
Woodpecker was in the same location as of 2:10 today. Thanks Dave!!

Hi all,
There was a Lewis's Woodpecker in Dowdy Draw this mid-day. It was last seen in
the cottonwoods around the outhouse about a quarter mile from the parking lot
off CO-170.
Other than that there was not much, being there at high noon on this rather
warm day did not help.

I hadn't seen a Lewis's woodpecker in the Boulder area for a few years and thus
was pleased to find one working over a fence post along W. Coal Creek Dr. about
1/3 mi E of its intersection with 66th St. (This is in grassland between
Marshall Lake and Superior.)

Dave Leatherman emailed me regarding the photos of the Lewis's Woodpecker I
posted showing a large whitish piece of something it was bringing to feed
it's nestlings. I thought this was some type of insect or larvae but Dave
believes it might be bread. It is certainly feasible that the adult
I recently found a Lewis's Woodpecker attending a nest hole on my friend's
property near Canon City in the same tree in which I have observed Lewis's
nesting the past several years. I watched, and photographed, the adult
bring a very large (at least 2 inches long) white object that I believe was
Yesterday I found a Lewis's Woodpecker on the east side of the Canon City
Riverwalk (1/2 mile east of the MacKenzie Ave parking lot at Fourmile Creek
marker) investigating a large tree stump. This species used to nest in
several large cottonwoods at this location until Starlings chased them
away.
COBirders,
Around 4 PM Saturday, May 8, Kiki Widjaja and I observed one of a pair of
Lewis's Woodpeckers believed to be nesting about half way between Sedalia
and Louviers on the west side of US Hwy 85. What a gorgeous bird and a

Earlier this morning at the lower entrance to White Ranch Open Space I observed
two Lewis's Woodpeckers in the Ponderosa's on the hillside north of the now dry
Van Bibber Creek. Also a first for me at this location was a single Bewick's
Wren in the shrubs getting up towards the footbridge.
