Thanks everyone for the help. I ended up removing the System file from the System Folder and then renaming the System Folder to something innocuous. The wierd thing was (to me at least) that after this treatment was applied, instead of giving me the blinking ?, the SE/30 would momentarily display

what i do is create a folder in the System Folder and name it "finder in here" i then put the Finder inside this folder. to avoid confusion you can name your System Folders System Folder (7.1) and System Folder (7.0.1) to "bless" the System Folder with the "active" finder it needs to be opened an
