I think your comment is not a fair assessment of Mandrake 7.0. Your assessment is only a fractional portion of what the software offers. Have you checked to make sure the Harddrive does not have any problems prior to installing Mandrake 7.0. I have read this note and your previous note to

What security level did you use? If you chose a medium security level then you need to allow your users (people other root) access to those devices. I can slowly see you are very very new to linux and may not know anything about hows groups have privileges for hardware and software.
