Some progress: I found and was able to delete the old .config and .cache files. I then re-installed dt 1.6. Same problem: I can’t navigate within “Places”. My directory structure is visible but, selecting a folder either results in nothing happening at all or, an unrelated root folder opening

Hi Mark, in the first step you might go back to the MAC, select all photos and chose "write XMP" in lighttable-mode. I'm not sure if it would be better to erase the "old" overwritten xmps before. From the manual: write sidecar files Write XMP sidecar files for all selected images. The
