OK .. OK .. I solved the problem.
When importing from the camera the raw and jpg files are displayed
independently
When importing from disk then dt buries the jpg in a group with the raw.
Something should probably be a little more consistent.

I find myself using parametric masking on a number of occasions .. and
in particular to progressively apply a function to just the highlights
or just the shadow areas ... it is a real winner for me. But I do have a
small question.
The lightness slider does not appear to be truly progressive. If
Kofa; thanks for that reference: from your material it looks like I am
missing 'nvidia-331' and 'nvidia-331-uvm' but everything else on your
list looks to be in place.
Debian offers kernel 340.96 now can I assume that does not create
problems?

I have always been somewhat fearful of the image deletion process in dt, it
that images were not recoverable from the trash.
I now find that if I do accidentally 'fry' an image it can be easily
recovered, prior to exiting from dt, by simply reimporting the folder in which
the image sits.

I have switched over to using the gnome desktop and do have the
gnome-color-manager installed but cannot find how to add the profiles
for my monitors and printers. I do have the required profiles on my

Canon does use (lossless) compression in their raw files and files can

An alternative idea:
Mask off the entire lower section of the image then us an inverted (180
degree) 'graduated density' filter. This should provide more color
density on the horizon and less as it progresses upwards. The mask will
protect everything below the horizon.
