A clarification of the initial report:
in cases when the VGA mode is broken, both the font is reset
to the default 8x16 AND also the VGA mode is switched to the
80x25. The 8x8 font is loaded into the 80x50 VGA mode.

Actually, when I add the 'Login' french translation 'identifiant
d\'utilisateur' the part of the string I can see is 'ilisateur'.
It's an example, all strings work on this model and when translation are
entirely displayed.

After digging around I found a virtual server's logfile which read:

Set IGNORE_PCI_CLASS_DISPLAY=false in /etc/default/hotplug. Then Hotplug
will load video drivers such as nvidia, during boot up.
This defiantly works on my 2.6 machine; as for 2.4, the last time I used
it hotplug was missing the 'pcimodules' utility and so couldn't perform
cold plugging at boot

I can't boot 2.6.8 and 2.6.10 kernels on my system while 2.6.7 was
installed on same system and starts without problems few months ago.
