while looking into source code it looks like you have xpdfrc somewhere
on your system. poppler is parsing (propably for compatibility reasons)
xpdfrc configuration file, which could be the place
mentioning /usr/share/xpdf/ mapping files.
Ie. it looks like just as simple configuration
