While digging the issue, I've found kernel bug 5894 [1] which looks
close to the problem I found.
Following the advice, I've changed the way my usb disks are plugged.

Sorry, I missed Kurts last post about the hash-driver.
I'm indeed using the hash-driver, but IMHO this should work without
mysterious failures _or_ there should be a very big warning that one
shouldn't use the buggy hash-driver _or_ the driver should be removed
from Etch.
