I also just faced this bug.
As far as I understand, 'permission denied' problem is because when root
tries to write to nfs mounted directory, root_squash works, and [in
default setup] nfs server gets write request from 'nobody' and denies it.
Question is - why package upgrading tries to do what
I report the additional facts about this problem.
In my environment, uim is used.
1. This also happen with ascii characters. This is not only for Japanese
characters.

The enclosed patch can be put in as "debian/patches/01_vserver.patch"
into the unpacked debian source for aufs (0+20070904-1) and
then "debuild"-ed. The "aufs-source" package that is built does
