I can't really fix this myself, because I can't get a working debian
installation

Problem appears to be nvram corruption. Reset nvram from Open Firmware
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
(same procedure commonly used to 'repair' failing firewire and usb ports).

The crash occurs even when there is no usb device present. The console log
