Bug#340609: re
Hi, after grepping for mnt2 in the source I guess you mean the MNTPOINT-variable in fai.conf ?! (Which is used for nfs-mounting a debian-mirror during installation on the client.) I agree that this directory is not fancy, but I doubt it's really serious, as it's only during installation. d-i uses /target during installation, which (without looking) also seems like a FHS violation... As stated in #309554 I would propose to use /var/lib/fai (or /srv if policy allows it) for fai's directories on the client, so I would propose /var/lib/fai/debian-mirror here (or /srv/fai/debian-mirror). IMO a mirror is not a (real) medium, so IMO /media does not fit. Which leaves the question open, where to mount a debian-mirror on a installed system... IMO this is out of scope for this bug and should not be dealt with (now + here). In any case I propose to downgrade the severity to normal. (normal, not important, as the MNTPOINT only resides in $NFSROOT.) regards, Holger pgpqVdH6ORitp.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#340608: fai: nfsroot should not be in /usr
Hi, I have some remarks to this bug. First, I think it can be merged with #309554, which severity should be raised at least to important... (But) #309554 deals with both the FAI_CONFIGDIR (currently defaults to /usr/local/share/fai) and NFSROOT (defaults to /usr/lib/fai/nfsroot) - both variables are set in /etc/fai/fai.conf resp. fai-nfsroot.conf. As I've said in #309554 I strongly believe /srv/ should be used for both. I like to add now, that IMO - if /srv is a policy violation at the moment (vorlon, what is your statement/guess regarding FHS 2.3 and etch ?) - this should be changed to /var/lib/fai and changed again later. Thomas, I really dont think (anymore) that it's a good idea to keep important bugs open for 2 years, just because you don't want to change it twice. My rationale for not having NFSROOT in /usr is that it is supposed to be changed during normal operation (creating, upgrading, adding packages to it) - quoting file:/usr/share/doc/debian-policy/fhs/fhs.html/fhs-4.html : Any information that is host-specific or _varies_with_time_ is stored elsewhere. (Emphasis mine.) On Friday 25 November 2005 17:10, Stephen Gran wrote: So long as the files aren't shipped in the .deb, and only put in /srv when an admin runs the tool, then I think that is exactly the place for them to go. My only worry was that fai-setup was being invoked automatically, or that the files were being proposed to be shipped in the .deb. Both of those scenarios would be wrong. Well, the upcoming fai-quickstart packages postinst copies the simple examples to FAI_CONFIGDIR... Currently there is not code in trunk (for the quickstart package) to setup the nfsroot, but we want this, too. I do find nothing in http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#SRVDATAFORSERVICESPROVIDEDBYSYSTEM which says its only up to the local admin to populate /srv, it only says, no program should rely on a specific structure in it. Which fai doesnt do, as it's configurable thru variables. Summary what I think should be done: - raise #309554 to serious - raise #340608 to serious again - merge #309554 and #340608 - change default setting of NFSROOT to /var/lib/fai/nfsroot, maybe even /var/lib/fai/nfsroot/$ARCH - change default setting of FAI_CONFIGDIR to /var/lib/fai/config - close the bug - when FHS 2.3 is required by policy, change those paths to /srv regards, Holger pgpGop2wKnokO.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#337619: rebuilding ipw2200 on 2.6.14-3
Hi, I cannot confirm this (What DID work was). Workaround: dpkg -i --force-architecture fai-kernels_1.9.1_i386.deb You dont gain anything by this workaround as these kernels need to be installed in a fai nfsroot which has to be created on the target architecture (i386 here) anyway, as make-fai-nfsroot calls debootstrap which in turn executes all the packages postinst scripts, which will lead to the execution of binaries. Since this investigation is a year old, I would like to ask upstream and the maintainers of the fork to comment on the current situation. Have those issues been addressed ? We talked about Cinelerra at the QA miniconf and I sent him a list of problematic source files I had gathered. He is in touch with other people interested in packaging Cinelerra. I've not really got into touch with the cinelerra-cvs community yet, only with Herman Robak (who is deeply involved in cinelerra-cvs)... With this mail I try to address the issues and connect the people who could have an interest in solving them. http://www.heroinewarrior.com/support.php3 (real upstream) mentions the fork on their support/harrassment page, so I tend to think, they're somewhat happy about it... Another big problem: Currently the build requirements for the debian packages provided from cinelerra-cvs (see http://cvs.cinelerra.org/getting_cinelerra.html or http://developer.skolelinux.no/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/external/cinelerra/hvirtual/README.BUILD?rev=HEADcontent-type=text/plain ) include a number of packages which are not in Debian but distributed via ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ - I hope that it will be possible to create a cinelerra version, which works with free codecs from Debian proper only, and still can use additional codecs from marillat. Bug#401889: memory requirements for powerpc
Package: debian-installer-manual severity: wishlist Hi, the following memory requirements for powerpc should be documented in the manual, because booting with too little memory results in strange effects / error messages, which especially people new to powerpc will not understand, and therefor think the installer is broken for there machine. d-i: recommended is 48mb, might work with less, but on newworld it sureley doesnt boot with 32mb. (tested with daily cd from 2006-12-04). 64mb is still low-mem. d-i: recommended is 128mb. works with 96mb, but partioning is buggy then. Obviously you (or rather the author of the vserver-fai build method) can fix the vserver-fai build method to work with the current version of fai... but if you dont do this, I think it's much better for the users of util-vserver and fai (and also for the maintainers who will receive bugreports), if you remove it. I very often deploy vservers with fai without using a nfsroot and just using softupdate. So this is kind of a regression. - possible more ;) Sam, I think you could greatly help if you could describe what changes are _really_ needed in fai to make vserver-build.fai work... regards, Holger Log from the discussion on #vserver, which made me notice this: daniel_hozac mugwump: i've committed the fai to the svn now with a few fixes (check for nfsroot, removing the directories in killprocs, probably something else i forgot). -- phreak`` has quit (Quit: leaving) -- phreak`` ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) has joined #vserver h01ger daniel_hozac, whats fai in this context? daniel_hozac h01ger: Debian's fully automatic installation, or whatever it's called :) --- _[PUPPETS]Gonzo is now known as [PUPPETS]Gonzo h01ger daniel_hozac, interesting. i'm an active fai developer :) so what code did you commit to vservers (?) svn? h01ger and mugwump used to hang around in #fai too :) h01ger and i maintain my vservers with fai :) meandtheshell h01ger: http://svn.linux-vserver.org/viewvc.py/util-vserver/ :) h01ger daniel_hozac, and where there exactly? which path? daniel_hozac it's a fai build method. daniel_hozac trunk/scripts/vserver-build.fai daniel_hozac https://savannah.nongnu.org/patch/?5058 daniel_hozac h01ger: opinions appreciated :) h01ger FAI_NFSROOT and FAI_CONFIGDIR use hardcoded and deprecated paths (?) h01ger mugwump, daniel_hozac: have you tested this with fai 3.0, released sometime last week? h01ger ah, nor hardcoded daniel_hozac i haven't tested it at all. h01ger each time i see /usr/local in FAI_NFSROOT||_CONFIGDIR I get a heart-attack. i reported this stupid bug in 2003 and it was fixed last month. after three years of nagging. daniel_hozac hehe. h01ger thats why first screamed and then read further. they are at least not hardcoded... h01ger also this looks suspicious to me: h01ger echo *** Looks like you don't have the patched FAI. h01ger echo *** get it from svn://svn.debian.org/svn/fai/people/mugwump/vserver daniel_hozac how so? h01ger cause it should work with the unpatched fai?! daniel_hozac should it? would you be able to try? * daniel_hozac doesn't have any Debian hosts available to him. daniel_hozac i have no idea what mugwump's fai changes from vanilla. * h01ger neither. but i just check, the test fails with fai_3.0 h01ger checked daniel_hozac right, i suppose that's the idea. daniel_hozac but if that was commented, would it work? daniel_hozac it being the build method. h01ger i have no idea, as i dont know what feature mugwump added h01ger also i'm unhappy about the hardcoded tmpfs mounting for the vserver - i usually disable this for my vservers (as 16mb /tmp is way to little) daniel_hozac 19:58 h01ger cause it should work with the unpatched fai?! daniel_hozac that is just temporary for the build though. daniel_hozac surely a 64 MiB /tmp should suffice for building a guest? h01ger daniel_hozac, yes. but its hard to say if it will work, if i dont know what changes mugwump has in his branch. h01ger daniel_hozac, for building thats fine. didnt see that h01ger mugwump, i also dislike that this needs a setup fai nfsroot. i heavily use fai softupdate and i often dont even have a nfsroot... daniel_hozac h01ger: so what would you change? :) h01ger daniel_hozac, so this build method will show up in vserver-utils one day? daniel_hozac one day very soon. daniel_hozac i'd really want to release 0.30.211 next week. h01ger daniel_hozac, i dont know why its needed. atm i'm looking into replacing the custom fai-live-cd build scripts (which also rely on the nfsroot) with the (new) live-package from debian, which is a generic infrastructure to build live cds. and i promised to look at the munin-vserver plugins today. so i wont look much further into vserver-build.fai ;-) daniel_hozac h01ger: ok, so how would you build guests with fai? h01ger with the debootstrap method. then i just run fai softupdate and be done h01ger i have a script for this, which prepares the vserver a tiny bit after building, so i agree, a build-method makes sense. but the current implementation looks like quite a hack to me :-/ daniel_hozac i do kind of agree :) h01ger and mugwump also only send a mail to the fai list
Bug#390545: integrate vserver-build.fai
Hi Sam, On Sunday 01 October 2006 22:31, you wrote: Please note that this new feature does not interfere with your approach of using the debootstrap build method and then running softupdate. Sure. I would just be happy to throw away my approach and use yours :-) Perhaps we can suggest these two methods as alternatives for building vservers in the documentation. I think this (under the title setting up vservers) is more confusing and has no benifits. My approach is just a logical extension of softupdates, which should be covered anyway. Your approach should be the offical way to setup vservers. Far from being a regression, each approach has its advantages and disadvantages; the approach of using the nfsroot (which, of course, becomes a somewhat figurative term) makes the build a single logical step, and ensures consistency if the intent is to prototype real host builds using vservers. An nfsroot is just debootstrap plus some extra packages defined in fai.conf. So the consistency can be easily reproduced without relying on a actual existing nfsroot. I also fail to see why an nfsroot is needed for i386 builds on amd64. As for the default paths being obsolete, I am currently working on I hope you read my comment on #vserver about why I'm so upset if I see those pathes: I insisted three years to make FAI behave in a FHS compatible way and after this long time I really freak out, if I see /usr/local/share/fai - it makes my eyes bleed and my brain cry ;-) Nothing personal :) making this usable for the current stable release of debian before I move on to making it work with testing. I based it off FAI 2.10.1; and plan to re-base it off the latest 2.x release. Please bear in mind that I have been familiarizing myself with FAI along the way, and that now we have a working system (and the projects we are using this for - the .nz registry system and NZ Electoral Enrolment Centre offices - are in deployment phase), we are in a position to spend time to take our improvements and share them. Cool. Perhaps in the meantime you might have suggestions for detecting which version of FAI is installed dpkg -l fai or dpkg -l fai-client if using the split packages (which are default since etch.) regards, Holger pgp94sELDMhH5.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#390504: FAI_CONFIGDIR is ignored
Hi, not sure if I need to cc: you... I'm subscribed to the fai package in the BTS, so you dont have to cc: me... (but in the BTS I dont mind, on the lists I do :) On Sunday 01 October 2006 22:31, you wrote: That means, fai softupdates does not work at all with the default config, right? Yes. Then this bug is rather important, I guess. Or am I missing something? (If I am right I'll update the severity which I already set to normal from none) There is no none severity. The default _is_ normal :) I was thinking about important severity as well, but decided against it. It's completly trivial to work around it and I rather prefer to fix the more important documentation issues first. But obviously _I_ also dont mind if the severity is increased. But Thomas might, thats why I left it normal. (Which as said is just a bug, cause its easy to fix yourself. Other stuff is really important.) regards, Holger pgpH63rISgQgZ.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#370339: maintainer doesnt want to use this patch, because...
Hi, as the reasons why Joey doesnt want to accept this patch were discussed on the german irc channel already, I asked Joey if I can add his reasons here: h01ger Joey doesnt want to use this patch, because he thinks that adding debconf as a dependency is bloat and manually editing the config file by an admin or with cfengine from a package works well. He says, those questions are not needed for most default installations and they only cover special cases. Joey hup, fine. regards, Holger pgpUdnF6JqcRL.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#401307: ITP: olsrd - optimized link-state routing daemon
Package: wnpp Version: N/A; reported 2006-12-02 Severity: wishlist * Package name : olsrd * Version : 0.4.10 * Upstream Authors : Andreas Tønnesen([EMAIL PROTECTED]), Thomas Lopatic([EMAIL PROTECTED]) * URL : http://www.olsr.org * License : BSD Copyright (c) 2004, Andreas Tønnesen([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Thomas Lopatic([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Description : Optimized Link-State Routing daemon olsrd is an implementation of the Optimized Link State Routing protocol for Mobile Ad-Hoc networks(MANET). The protocol is described in RFC3626. It is designed to be run as a standalone server process - but as it is still in an experimental stage most users will prefer running it with some debug output which is directed to STDOUT. . OLSR operates as a table driven, proactive protocol, i.e., exchanges topology information with other nodes of the network regularly. It is developed to work independently from other protocols. Likewise, OLSR makes no assumptions about the underlying link-layer. regards, Holger pgpFxmPItPnWD.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#398039: raising severity
severity 398039 serious thanks from #debian-release h01ger hi - do you know that python-cjkcodecs is uninstallable in etch? Setting up python-cjkcodecs (1.1.1-2+b1) ... h01ger pycentral: pycentral pkginstall: python-cjkcodecs needs unavailable runtime (2.3) h01ger just saw that this is #398039 (normal) buxy it should probably be removed because it's useless with python 2.4 buxy h01ger: much like python-iconvcodec and #398899 (same kind of mia maintainer), I suggest you increase the severity and ask its removal buxy (after checking in the changelog that it effectively only provides something useful for python2.3) h01ger sorry, i wont have time for that (checking) today, monday monday... and customer project needs to be done tomorrow. if you want, i can cutpaste this discussion to [EMAIL PROTECTED] regards, Holger pgpCEJy5x1FoB.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#401530: usb-scanners don't work on powerpc (little endian)
package: hplip version: 1.6.10-2 severity: grave tags: upstream Hi, scanning with usb-connected devices does not work on powerpc (or all little endian archs I guess). After I followed the instructions in this email, http://www.mail-archive.com/hplip-devel%40lists.sourceforge.net/msg00233.html and recompiled the package, scanning works. But I dont think removing that macro is the right solution for all archs :) regards, Holger pgpa0bvJOCMcG.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#398789: its still an issue
reopen 398789 severity 398789 wishlist retitle 398789 please make installable, even if no PRNG exists clone 398789 -1 reassign -1 openssh retitle -1 please make installable, even if no PRNG exists thanks Hi, this bug is still a bug, even if it's not RC. On (normal) vservers, you cannot create devices, so if you create a chroot on a vserver, it lacks (amongs others) the (u)random devices, so installing this package in such a chroot will fail. I do understand, that a PRNG is needed for operation of the package, but sometimes it's usefull to only install it (for example when creating live-cds in such a chroot on a vserver...), so it would be nice, if the package installation wouldnt fail if no PRNG is available. Thanks. regards, Holger pgppWBgtPlZQ7.pgp Description: PGP signature
