character devices section is the apm support, in which you can turn the

Yes, you are right. If you uploaded from a working version, the
directory's permissions would not change. Hence, it has taken a few
months for the change to be noticed.

Now maybe I'll be able to recompile that darned kernel.

If you currently have Debian 1.1 installed on the system, you don't need
floppies to upgrade. Just have dselect update the packages file and
install the packages.
If you have an odd problem with one machine reading the floppy, it is
often memory related - especially in the case of the Cyrix CPUs.
Use mount -t vfat when you mount that partition and Linux will
recognize Windows 95 long filenames. You might have to load the
vfat module. You don't need to use UMSDOS, nor will it help.

When you mount a filesystem, the visible effects are mounting a directory
tree structure, from the mount point down, so with only one filesystem (on
/dev/hda) you CANNOT replace
