I had a similar problem caused by having the line eval `resize` in my .bashrc . Apparantly it conflicted somehow whith the concurrent subshell process (whatever that is). Starting mc with the -u switch disables the concurrent subshell. I ended up just commenting out that line in my .bashrc.
