First, apt-get kernel-package, and learn to use make-kpkg. (This is the
only official debian way. Read doc comes with it.)
Apply flavour patch prior to use for best result if you use old debian
source packages or kernel from kernel.org.
Kernel header is not needed for this task.

or
fbset --all 640-480-72 gives the same exact error message.
Is there something that is not set up properly? Any suggestions would be

gcc is a set of links to gcc-2.95. They are installed together

Normally you should have gcc. This package installs 'gcc' binary which
is actually just frontend to real compilators. gcc-2.95 and gcc-3.0
should install compilators ites

Debian provides a whole bunch of very nifty update-* scripts.
Some of them are (man -k update-):

I've been having some problems on shutdown. My box goes through the
usual routine but then near the end I get an error message:
Warning can't open file: /var/run/shutdown.pid
(recalled from memory so that might not be exactly the right warning)
and then it prompts for the root password
