Look at the man page for tzconfig. Make sure that your link for
/etc/localtime is correct and that /etc/timezone has the correct
information. Also run hwclock to check to see what your BIOS is reporting
as current time. That might be why linux is confused. I'd start there.

That should do it. Also try man xterm for a plethora of other options you
can give to the xterm program. Might also want to take a look a RXVT.
BTW, the command above is just a beginning, if you need a login shell,

I'd like to re-install Netscape but I can no longer find the Debian
installer script/package. Where did it go? What are all the "other"
packages, now in Slink, that mention Netscape? I just want something to
do what the older installer did:
1) Extract the .tar.gz from /tmp
2) Install in proper
Do you have ntfs support compiled into your kernel? The support is
"experimental" I believe and that is for the read-only. I understand the
read-write ability to be considered unsafe to use. I have had no problems
with the read-only stuff working though.

the first option which asks if you would like do add support for
"experimental" stuff.
Then go to the sound section and select [Y]es for the es1370 support.

I would like to mirror the unstable tree at work. I have tried to
accomplish this with several tools (fmirror/mirror/lftp) but I can't
figure out how to get exactly what I want.
When I use fmirror (which I like), most of what is downloaded are symbolic
links to "slink" which are not useful to me

I have a soundblaster 16 card along with a sony cd (cdu33a) with a Creative
Labs front. I need to know how to get Linux to read it. In my Dos system,
the address for sb16 was 220 and the cd-rom was 230. Can you tell me how

I have been reading the O'Reilly DNS/Bind book and it mentions a
program/utility (h2n) to convert a hosts file to the db.* files needed for
DNS. I searched the debian packages in both stable/unstable and couldn't

I would like to separate /usr onto its own partition on a different disk.
First, I am under the assumption that this might speed my I/O times
because both disks are Ultra2's. Secondly given my set-up below, what is

A great many files could possibly be effected. It depends on if you are
running DNS, sendmail, samba, etc.. The essential files are
/etc/hostname, /etc/hosts, and edit /etc/init.d/network for the ip
changes.

I have 2 Debian boxes with 3c905b NICs. Both are running 2.2.2 but with
netbase 3.1-1.21 the ip-aliasing stuff "works", as in the ip alias is
created but ifconfig will not show the alias unless you call it explicitly
with the interface name.

I have a one gateway with a 3c905b (Boomerang) running 2.2.2 just fine.
When I use ifconfig to alias an ip it works no problem. On a different
machine, an HP Vectra, with a 3c905b? (Cyclone) and the IP-aliasing works
only with 2.0 kernels. Weird. I have compiled 2.2.2 for this Vectra 6

download the binary XF86_SVGA Xserver from xfree86.org and place it it

I have an older 310tx with the Digital 21140 AE chip which works great. I
also noticed that Netgear decided to remove the Digital 21140 (Tulip)
chip from their more recent models. If you have a 310tx card that says
"NETGEAR" on the chip try and take it back. If you look hard enough you

compile (using the ./build lnx command) it bails when trying to link to
termcap (-ltermcap "File or directory does not exist"). Any idea how to

When I was taking CS classes in college there was this one student who
many of us suspected of not being entirely honest about the

Netscape locks everytime I use it now. I have Netscape Communicator 4.05
and I am running Debian 2.0. It never used to due that and I haven't
changed or added anything to this machine. If anyone has had this

I would like to know if I am backing up my system correctly. I am using the
following command to backup with tar.
tar -creat -file /dev/st0 /
Then a compare with
tar -compare -v -f /dev/st0
Is this the best way to use tar for backing up to a tape drive.

of anyway to convert a binary file accidentally
downloaded in ASCII mode, I think data is actually lost if Binary mode
is not used on a binary file. If this is the case you will probably
need to download it again.
Let's hope I'm wrong!
