Have you considered using the isapnptools package?
I am guessing that
since the machine is a P-II, it is PnP compliant.
Its worth giving a go, but I still don't understand
why the options I have set in modules.conf are not
being picked up.

Lo que ocurria es que la tarjeta estaba defectuosa.
La cambié por otra igual, ejecuté el pnpdump y
el isapnp y la detectó.

having trouble with the module on install (that is it fails)
do i need to tell it the IRQ/IO arguments?
if so what is the syntax?

When you try to load the module, does the installer give you a place for
you to type the module options? I can't check this at the moment, but I
think it does. Type in it something like: io=0x300 irq=10 (as Dwight

I've got a Realtek-8029, which is a PCI NE2000 clone, so it might
be similar.
IIRC, the NE2k cards depend on the 8390 module. You will need this
module to avoid the unresolved symbols.
To associate the card with the eth0 interface, I add the line
alias eth0
