I don't think that .po is the best file format for doing this job. Is there any way for .po files to carry formatting information without being mixed up with content? If would be helpful to see a sample file just to understand how it works. Another solution comes to my mind, but I don't know i

Well, italian wikipedia translators don't use any tool at all to accoplish their job. They simply copy-paste wikitext from the original page to the new one, then they translate directly, hiding inside comments parts still untranslated. It seems that also other l10n teams work this way, so there
