I want to run this past everyone who might be involved in translating
documents on the OOoWiki and get some of your input.

Is there a way to synch the english pages to the translated pages?. It
seems to be hard to track the edition of english page and then update
the translated counterpart.
If not every page of the wiki (some carry temporary information), but

That's a good question, and one we've discussed within the Doc group a
few times, including at OOoCon this year.

I don't think that .po is the best file format for doing this job. Is
there any way for .po files to carry formatting information without being
mixed up with content? If would be helpful to see a sample file just to
understand how it works.

Well, italian wikipedia translators don't use any tool at all to
accoplish their job. They simply copy-paste wikitext from the original
page to the new one, then they translate directly, hiding inside
comments parts still untranslated.
It seems that also other l10n teams work this way, so there
