 Hello all,

There is some good stuff that is scheduled for 9.7 already, I found the
following changes in the changelog that look especially interesting:
  - Concurrent query rewrites for vector queries.
  - Speedups to vector indexing/search via integration of the Panama
 vector API.
  - Reduced overhead of soft deletes.
  - Support for update by query.

I propose we start the process for a 9.7 release, and I volunteer to be
the release manager. I suggest the following schedule:
  - Feature freeze on June 16th, one week from now. This is when the 9.7
 branch will be cut.
  - Open a vote on June 21st, which we'll possibly delay if blockers get
 identified.

Re: [JENKINS] Lucene » Lucene-Check-9.4 - Build # 509 - Failure!

2022-10-25 Thread Ignacio Vera
I think the problem here is that at the point of running those commands I
had lost trust in the release wizard and I was running the commands
manually. The instructions for those steps do not contain running tidy
(maybe we should add them there too).

One of the problems at the moment in the release wizard is that any step
that involves running a gradle task on main branch fails because it
requires java 17 and we run all commands with java 11. I think that should
be addressed, those steps were missing for the 9.4.0 release and I fixed
them too.

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Lucene 9.4.1 released

2022-10-24 Thread Ignacio Vera
The Lucene PMC is pleased to announce the release of Apache Lucene 9.4.1.

Apache Lucene is a high-performance, full-featured search engine library
written entirely in Java. It is a technology suitable for nearly any
application that requires structured search, full-text search, faceting,
nearest-neighbor search across high-dimensionality vectors, spell
correction or query suggestions.

This release contains numerous bug fixes, optimizations, and improvements,
some of which are highlighted below. The release is available for immediate
download at:

### Lucene 9.4.1 Release Highlights:

 * When reading large segments, the kNN vectors format could fail with a
validation error, preventing further writes or searches on the index. This
bug is now fixed. Only version 9.4.0 was affected, so it is recommended to
skip 9.4.0 if you are using kNN vectors.

Please read CHANGES.txt for a full list of changes:

Note: The Apache Software Foundation uses an extensive mirroring network for

distributing releases. It is possible that the mirror you are using may not
have

replicated the release yet. If that is the case, please try another mirror.

This also applies to Maven access.

Re: Bugfix release Lucene 9.4.1

2022-10-24 Thread Ignacio Vera
Hello,

I am currently stuck on the release on the lucene site. I think I have
everything in place but it seems it is not building properly so when I look
into staging I see nothing:

https://lucene.staged.apache.org/

I have tried to build it locally without success and have no clue how to
debug it further. Hopefully someone can help here. I see in the logs many
failures like:

WARNING: Feeds generated without SITEURL set properly may not be valid
ERROR: Could not process
pylucene/pylucene_news/2020-04-29-8-3-0-available.md
| module 'markdown' has no attribute 'version_info'

Hi,

I just noticed an important regression on polygon queries using the
LatLonPoint field, see https://github.com/apache/lucene/issues/11824.

It feels like an important regression so it might be worth a respinning.
Sorry about that.

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Lucene 9.3.0 released

2022-07-29 Thread Ignacio Vera
29 July 2022 - Apache Lucene™ 9.3.0 available

The Lucene PMC is pleased to announce the release of Apache Lucene 9.3.0.

The release is available for immediate
download at:
https://lucene.apache.org/core/downloads.html

Lucene 9.3.0 Release Highlights:
• Merge on full flush is enabled now by default with a timeout of
500ms.
• Add getAllChildren functionality to facets.
• Added facetsets module for high dimensional (hyper-rectangle)
faceting.
• Top-level two-clause disjunctions sorted by score now use the
block-max MAXSCORE algorithm.
• When running KnnVectorQuery with a filter, reuse the cached
filter bit set.

Please read CHANGES.txt for a full list of new features and changes:

Re: [VOTE] Release Lucene 9.3.0 RC1

2022-07-28 Thread Ignacio Vera
Hi Uwe,

Yes, I closed the vote already and I followed the instructions in the
release manager. One of the instructions is to delete the artifacts from
the staging area so I'm not sure why those are still there.
I have already pushed the artifacts to maven for publishing. I am very
sorry that Policeman Jenkins did not have the time to run.

Cheers,

Ignacio

Please find here the draft for the release highlights. I have probably
missed things that should be included so please feel free to add them.

New branch and feature freeze for Lucene 9.3.0

2022-07-20 Thread Ignacio Vera
NOTICE:

Branch branch_9_3 has been cut and versions updated to 9.4 on stable branch.

Please observe the normal rules:

* No new features may be committed to the branch.

* Documentation patches, build patches and serious bug fixes may be

committed to the branch. However, you should submit all patches you

want to commit to Jira first to give others the chance to review

and possibly vote against the patch. Keep in mind that it is our

main intention to keep the branch as stable as possible.

* All patches that are intended for the branch should first be committed

to the unstable branch, merged into the stable branch, and then into

  the current release branch.

* Normal unstable and stable branch development may continue as usual.

However, if you plan to commit a big change to the unstable branch

while the branch feature freeze is in effect, think twice: can't the

addition wait a couple more days? Merges of bug fixes into the branch

  may become more difficult.

* Only Jira issues with Fix version 9.3 and priority "Blocker" will delay

  a release candidate build.

The only step missing is to add the Jenkins job on the release branch which
is something I don't really know how to do it, hopefully someone can help
here.

I am planning to build the first RC next Monday if there are no issues.

Re: Lucene 9.3.0 release

2022-07-18 Thread Ignacio Vera
Just a quick reminder I plan to cut the 9.3 branch this Wednesday at 9:00
CEST. Let me know if there is any issue.

@Mike: I see that LUCENE-10577
<https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-10577> is still under API
discussions, Do you think it will make it to the release? LUCENE-10592
<https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-10592> seems to have made
good progress, would you think it will be ready?
@Nick: I gave you feedback on the PR. I think it is way too risky to add an
encoding in a rush. I recommend adding the change in the sandbox if you
want to iterate in there or wait for another release where there is more
time to think through the encoding.

Cheers,

Ignacio

Lucene 9.3.0 release

2022-07-11 Thread Ignacio Vera
Hello!

Lucene 9.2.0 was released around 2 months ago and we are accumulating
 a good
bunch of new features, optimizations and bug fixes. Would there be support
for releasing Lucene 9.3 soon?

I am happy being the release manager. I did not see any issues marked
"blocker", but please let me know if there are any.

Thanks,

 Ignacio

Re: [VOTE] Release Lucene 9.0.0 RC1

2021-11-21 Thread Ignacio Vera
Your issue has not been ignored but the problem is that the version of the
blocker has not been added so it doesn't appear in a search for blockers in
Lucene 9 :(

Do we need to discuss this again? I thought we discussed and agreed on
increasing our backwards compatibility. My personal opinion is that it is a
natural step for mature software that it is increasingly used in production
environments.

Regarding your concerns in the subject, there is a healthy discussion in
the issue and there are sound proposals to ease the pain and they can be
implemented any time, do you think it is still a blocker?

Re: What should we do of branch_8x?

2021-11-21 Thread Ignacio Vera
I agree with Robert here, this makes little sense as there is no tooling in
this repository to release solr without lucene. If it ever happens it will
probably be done outside.

The idea of "leaving a door open" has no justification because it is more
"drawing a door in a wall" and might give false expectations.

+1 to remove the branch.

I'd like to backport Lucene-9870 which is a bug in distance queries that
causes no matches along indexed lines and polygon edges. This fix
only touches one class tho so very low risk.

Hi Jan,

I spoke with Simon offline and we agreed I will be the release manager as
he was running in to issues. I have already started building the RC1, do
you think this bugfix should be considered for a respin?

Lucene/Solr 8.6.2 bugfix release

2020-08-24 Thread Ignacio Vera
Hi,

I propose a 8.6.2 bugfix release and I volunteer as RM. The motivation for
this release is LUCENE-9478 where Simon addressed a serious memory leak in
DWPTDeleteQueue.

If there are no objections I am planning to build the first RC by the end
of this week.

Ignacio

I updated the Solr's release announcement so there is no changes. I think
the Lucene's bug fix is not relevant for Solr.

Lucene/Solr 8.5.1 bugfix release

2020-04-02 Thread Ignacio Vera
Hi,

I propose a quick 8.5.1 bugfix release and I volunteer as RM. The main
motivation for this release is LUCENE-9300 where Jim addressed a serious
bug that can lead to data corruption when merging indices via IW#addIndices.

If there are no objections I am planning to create a RC early next week.

Best regards,

Ignacio
