We're getting to my level of incompetence now... The e-smith user
management functions all note that IDs should be lower case. I think (not
sure, though) that Samba is similarly case-sensitive. Just to get it out of
the equation, I'd try "rufus".

Yes, that's right. I just installed Samba 2.2.0 on the e-smith box,
and I'm trying to use it as a domain controller for a Win2k machine

I assume you mean for an NT or W2K box? There's a thread on the General
forum entitled "Domain Logon" which may be what you need.
