This is an item about a commercial product but I have approved its
distribution to this group.

activity.

This net was going along ok. I was copying both US and European
stations quite well. Then, one of the automatic unmanned QRM machines
came on. In this case it was Pactor, but could of been anything
really. There must have been an urgent message to get through, and the
entire internet was down.

There are
some commercial -non ham- RTTY signals that are in the clear ,
mostly from weather stations and ships, but not many. They use a
different setting from amateurs. Hams use a RTTY setting of 170,
commerical use 425 or 850. The software you mention may not support
the non ham modes.
That's cool. MT63 works like that a lot, too. I'm sorry about my negative remarks, I should have thought before posting. Those opinions belong on that other list, and all the endless arguing about that stuff is why I left this list a few months ago. I strongly disagree with the existence of

This is an old list and frequencies/times change but it will give you an
idea. Also, you might want to search for the free software MultiPSK it a
has a zilllion different modes and it will do the varying speeds and shifts
of RTTY. You can also use it to copy weather charts sent to ships. of
Craig, the best Olivia frequency reference is at www.hflink.com just go there and click on the
Olivia frequency link. 500/8 seems to be the most common on 40M.

Can you describe your digital station setup, please?
As I set mine up I'd like to learn from what you
are using so that I may maximize effectiveness.
I am guessing that it is not merely the Olivia

The CAT works fine and the receive is fine but no transmit. Speakers

Can anyone explain WHY we keep trying to run nets,
make contacts etc in a portion of the band which has long been used
for automatic pactor stations?
Have been making more than a few contacts, mostly
OLIVIA, using the portion of the band right above 14070, like 14073 and

Hi John,
Hope you are well. I suspect because it was a quiet freq and people
are supposed to listen before transmitting?
It was also a cw/rtty band portion long before it was a pactor
portion, so the long been used argument does not apply. Think it
is problematic as alot of modes claim freq
Agree,
500/8 seems to have become the default Olivia mode on most bands.

Well, I was CQing around 7073 around 0430, and I kept seeing ZS6W or
maybe ZS6WN and portions of my callsign, I think. Never heard a peep
or saw anything on the waterfall. Thought I heard the tell-tale
startup song of Olivia twice. No other action, at least as far as I
know. QRN was quite bad, and
