should be done, in the squeezebox or in the server.
The problem is you have to essentially decode a stereo signal in order

I was using a softsqueeze on my Mac and the radio worked fine with
alienBBC and Shoutcast causing no problems. Now I got myself a hard
squeezebox and the radio does not work anymore. I can hear the
beginning of the stream alright then the stream 'hangs' after less than
a minute.

Yes, it has two USB 1.1 ports. I am not sure if transfer speed is sufficient for music collection.
The other option is to keep the music files somewhere on the network.

I seem to recall there is a different category for hard disk based
music. I think the logic is that the owner of a stable of DJs could
just buy one copy for the whole group of them. It's more complex,
though, because DJs go to gigs with duplicate equipment, so 2 copies on
2 hard disks only = 1 gig
But I think the e-vectra has USB support, so you could put a big USB
disk on it.

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
If you want to save power and perhaps noise when there's no usage for a
while, use the power control applet to spin down your hard disk(s) after
half an hour of no use. This saves more than half of the total power

I started using the server on Monday and everything was working smoothly
for a couple of days. I was listening to Radio Paradise on Shoutcast and
life was great. Then on Wednesday the performance bogged down and now

3774) and MusicMagic 1.1.6b (paid/registered version).
