The musical fidelity vlink2 will work nicely with most modern linux distros (so should be fine on the Fedora used in Community Squeeaze) as an asynch USB to SPDIF adapter. You can use the M2tech Hiface but you need to build the driver for it - https://github.com/panicking/snd-usb-asyncaudio/wiki

There's no need to have the flirc sticking out at the front - I have used one for ages in various devices - it works without direct line-of-sight. It's a very useful gizmo - easily programmed & really flexible. And a percentage of the low-cost goes to a charitable foundation. -

I've recently started using my Squeezeboxes and Transporter after several years off. Thanks to help here on these forums I was able to get everything working smoothly or so I thought. Playback was glitch free connecting three rooms wirelessly for a couple of days then I started to get tweaked.
