One snag is that to do this "properly" (define this for yourself!) I
don't think you can use (just) plugins - it needs changes to the core
slimserver code and the database schema, which is why I've been
campaigning to get this taken up as part of the mainstream slimserver

Not as easy as you think. The question comes up quite a lot - search the
forum for Shoutcast, which is the usual solution for this requirement.
Note that using it to get the sound for a DVD you are watching will
probably not work due to buffering/delay issues.

0 was the first version which used MySQL.
Versions up to 6.3.1 used SQLlite (though you could use MySQL if you
wanted to). If your problem still appears in 6.3.1 then its not due to
MySQL, or else you didn't completely clear out 6.5 when downgrading.
6.5 onwards ONLY use MySQL.
o a full clear and rescan and see what
happens (look in the log file which is accessible from the debugging
page).

How exactly are you doing the search? If I click on "Search Music" from
the SS web home page, and put "Various" in the search box, I don't get
"Various Artists" among my results. Do you? If so, do you have some
albums tagged with "Various Artists

As for the difficulty of using the debug flags, I quite agree. However

lem, its a good idea to try to recreate it with a very small
library and just one or two playlists. That way each rescan only takes
a minute or two, and the logs are much smaller.
But if you can't give a reproducible case, no-one can
ur genres: and you can specify Genre
in the Advanced Search. What else are you looking for?

If you're in Windows look in the Event log (Applications), that often
has a helpful message if slimserver stops.
Also try
- upgrading to latest 6.5.1 nightly
- using the default skin
- disabling plugins ( a lot of plugins will crash 6.5 if you don't have
the latest versions loaded)
Perhaps not a purist solution but FWIW I got really fed up with seeing
several albums called "Greatest Hits" in the album list, so renamed
them all "Greatest Hits - ".
More usable and completely avoids this problem!
Well, there have been some issues and changes in this area so you really
should try a 6.5.1 nightly...

Linux box... I can't write authoritatively on that, so won't try. Only
two thoughts that occur to me - (1) use FLAC in the library and put a
FLAC-decoder in WMP on the Windows

Default2 doesn't work in 6.5 but wasn't entirely removed if you had it
installed previously. the answer is to switch to "default", for
example by navigating to "localhost:9000/default"
