FWIW, jumping in at the end, I've just tried updating to 6.2.2 from
6.2.1 on my XP MCE server, got the same problem.
Reverted to 6.2.1 after uninstalling, same problem. Rebooted routers
didn't help. Reset holding the + key didn't seem to help.

OK, this is all twilight-zone esque.
After posting the above I upgraded (again) to 6.2.2 because the build I
am on apparently was not the latest (release) version.
And now I'm having the *SAME* problem that the muffin man is having.
My Squeezebox 2 says the normal "press and hold brightness" bi

"corrupted" copy of the firmware file. This could have happened when he
downloaded 6.2.2 or when he executed the 6.2.2 installation process.

Power down the router and then power it back up. Forget the WAP for now, although if I were you, I'd power it down just to be safe. I've seen plenty of computer issues cleared up by doing things that logically (as far as I could tell) should have no affect on the issue at hand.

I had the firmware get hosed on me once.
I got back to "square one" by:
1. Check the "Forget this player checkbox" in SlimServer.
2. Unplug the Squeezebox.
3. Uninstall SlimServer.
