Unfortunately in the SB2 and SB3, 1 is as dark as it gets and it's no more fine-grained than that. Boom is much better - it can go much darker due to hardware differences. You may want to try Settings - Display - Standby Font set to High, then size set to small. To get a High font in the web

You could try filter film sheets available from any good photographic shop cut to size and stuck somehow over the SB3 display. I found a set here in the uk that came in 20 shades of A4 size for about £12. -- norman12
