AFAIK Apple _invented_ the nonstandard TCMP tag, so they clearly "got
it right" for some obscure value of "right" :)

I beg to differ: You cannot control this behaviour with Albumartist
Tags. At least, using TPE2 tags alone does not seem to affect it.
Using an "inverse compilation" tag, setting TCMP=0 has the desired
effect, but it involves a nonstandard ID3 tag. [read: ugly nonstandard

I think the problem here is that "clearly not compilations" varies
according to the viewer. Let's turn
A lot of Albums that are clearly not compilations are flagged as such.
So, while it sounds like a smart feature, the way it works now it is
more of a defect :)
Speaking of workarounds - I prefer the "Classic" skin.
But it also suffers when displaying Compilations. Instead of just
indicating "Albu
Well - you might think its brain-dead but it seems reasonable to me!
Anyway, I'm glad you've found a way to make things work for you.

Actually the problem is the braindead automatic Compilation detection in
SqueezeServer. (They should add a switch to disable it!!!)
If you have an album by Artist A, and just one track is played by guest
artist B, the album is listed/sorted as compilation.
Thanks to your links I've found that yo
Ah - yes well spotted!
If you are going to use the ArtistSort tag (I don't as it happens) then
you have to apply it consistently. No DBMS is going to handle valid but
conflicting data.
I couldn't understand why one would put "Various Artists" into an
ArtistSort tag...

it was fixed but it may be to do with the fact that you are using
contributor tags and artist sort tags...?

I am referring to the "Artistsort" Tag.
In my case (MP3/ID3) this is the "TSOP" Tag, but it also exists in
Flac/Vorbis where it is called "ARTISTSORT".

What's "Artist Sort"? is that a tag (or are you referring to an entry in
the SC database)

In fact, the problems is:
If you have a track with
Artist="Foo" ArtistSort="Foo"
and another track, on another album with
Artist="Foo" ArtistSort="Bar"
the outcome on SqueezeCenter seems to be random.
All the albums and tracks belonging to that artist are either sorted
under "Foo" or under "B
hmmm...the tags are at track level - IME you shouldn't have any tags
with "Various Artists" in them...AFAIK that's not how SC/SS works.
I've just checked my several hundred VA albums - not a "Various
Artists" tag to be seen...just the real track artist(s)

Famous last words. Check for APEv2 tags. If you drill down to the track
level it should say where the tags are being pulled from.

How is your disk directory structure organised?
iTunes and wmp handle tags differently to SC.
